Job Description

Join Chicago in Schools (CIS) in our mission to surround students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

We have a new role as an HR Generalist on our team.

Our employee population is over 75 full-time employees and we are looking to grow our team over the next few years. With that growth we are taking an opportunity to shape our HR team and leverage their skills and experiences to modernize our processes and practices to support our team mission and values best. This role will be influential in showing the value of HR and translating that value into the everyday work experience at CIS.

This role will report to our Fractional Chief People Officer who aids in strategy and shapes the practices and processes at CIS. The person in this HR Generalist role will bring their skills and ideas in support of the organization and the people in it. You will be encouraged to align our resources in a Goldilocks way meaning finding the best solutions and practices for CIS. Our intention is to reflect our mission and core values in our practices and support team members in their work that ultimately impacts the future of over 75000 students in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) system.

This role is hybrid and requires regular working hours at our office located at 815 West Van Buren in Chicago IL. Expect to be on-site an average of three days/week. We also enjoy a balanced workload and various time off options that include summer hours on Fridays between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

We are a small and mighty team so you will need to have proven relevant experience in HR.

You will have/bring/be:

  • at least 5 years of HR generalist experience that includes employee relations full cycle recruiting with an ongoing req load total compensation and/or recognition program administration compliance and performance management and talent management (annual reviews talent reviews training learning and development) experience.
  • experience in inputting and managing employee data inclusive of all aspects of an employees electronic file. Youll have experience handling confidential information with working and applicable knowledge of related laws HIPAA accommodations I-9s FLSA FMLA and/or other leave-related items.
  • worked with managers to build and follow talent acquisition practices that go beyond post-and-wait and instead employ creativity and gain insights to attract and recruit qualified candidates
  • an experience level that provides confidence in your ability to exercise ongoing autonomy and discretion and ask for help when needed. Your experience will enable sound judgment including the ability to both understand and apply consistency and/or exceptions where they best meet the needs of situations and align with our values.
  • Ability to provide ad hoc support to our Operations team with items including but not limited to assisting with time-sensitive items and projects participating in annual review and updates to practices and policies office-centric items (mail badge issuance etc.) and assisting in supporting business operations.

We need to balance everyones (including your) resources (i.e. time and money) to best align with our needs. We dont need best-in-class we need best-for-CIS. We want you to leverage our vendors and technology to streamline and drive efficiencies.

You will have/bring/be:

  • a learning and continuous improvement mindset with experience ability and courage to ask for help when needed. You will understand and challenge the why of processes and practices and recommend right-sized alternatives.
  • A preference for variety and adaptability and will be solutions-focused and flexible all in support of enabling our dynamic team
  • a go-to expert user of HR-centric technologies including ATS and HRIS with a proven record of learning and integrating evolving solutions to create efficiencies and simplicity. Your curiosity will lead you to look for trends and use data/reports as inputs for recommendations.
  • experience partnering with vendors i.e. benefit HRIS etc. and utilizing their expertise
  • proven experience and ability to influence outcomes and decisions applying and balancing a company and employee perspective inclusive of our values
  • a minimum of a related 2-year degree; preferred 4-year college degree or equivalent work experience

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with Paylocity and/or iSolve
  • Previous facilitation and/or presentation skills
  • Knowledge experience and/or application of design thinking methodology and tools
  • College degree or equivalent experience

What you will get:

The budgeted range for the base for this role is 90000 to 100000 dependent on relevant skill and experience levels. This role does not include any bonus incentives.
