Director Planned Giving Summary:
The Director Planned Giving is a key member of the development team and is responsible for developing and leading a comprehensive planned giving program to secure long-term philanthropic support through bequests trusts gift annuities and other estate planning tools. This individual will identify cultivate solicit and steward donors who are interested in legacy giving working closely with board members and legal/financial advisors to align donor interests with the organizations mission and goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Fundraises by assessing donors needs and interests and packaging UWM investments that effectively meet those needs and drive UWM resources.
  • Identifies potential donors and strategically cultivates and stewards relationships
  • Responsible for engaging donors in planned and deferred gifts identifying prospects designing and implementing gift-planned strategy providing guidance in gift structures that achieve donors goals and stewardship of donors with deferred gift commitments.
  • Assists with designing and leading an organization-wide comprehensive planned giving program that will increase legacy giving by ensuring donors have confidence that their contributions are having the impact they desire on the lives of people.
  • Commitment to the mission vision cultural values and expectations of United Way of the Midlands.
  • Identifies assesses and analyzes specific areas of donor interest and level of potential engagement with UWM.
  • Networks to increase acquisition of planned giving donors; actively works a portfolio to create meaningful interactions including gift solicitation and stewardship; engages in cross-functional relationship management teams to develop and support planning.
  • In partnership being able to articulate a solid understanding of deferred and tax planned gift vehicles and utilize this skillset to the benefit of donors colleagues and UWM.
  • Develops best practices for the planned giving donor engagement; ensures that all systems and processes from gift documentation to reporting are accurate.
  • Identifies and manages a portfolio of 150 qualified planned giving donors; Serves as the strategist on the relationship management teams for all $100000 planned giving donors and prospects.
  • Manages defined pipeline of new and retained planned giving donors through meaningful interactions and execution of appropriate relationship building steps to increase revenue.
  • Leverages national donor cultivation and stewardship opportunities to increase meaningful donor interactions.

  • A successful candidate will be an action and detail-oriented highly energetic professional with a track record of building planned giving donor relationships closing gifts in the six and seven-figure range and skilled at inspiring influencing and engaging people.
  • Must have exceptional interpersonal skills solid judgement in communication and the ability to think strategically and influence others.
  • Proven record of effective relationship development collaboration and negotiation with a wide variety of positions and personalities.
  • Able to communicate in a cross-functional way to identify non-typical partnership opportunities between business and non-profit entities.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to craft compelling messages and narratives.
  • Confidence in representing the organization to stakeholders and the public.
  • Experience and ability to manage relationships at every level within a corporation including C-Level.
  • Expert understanding of local and national trends in philanthropy and charitable giving.
  • Understands the diverse perspectives of stakeholders and works with them to resolve differences.
  • Has existing relationships with leaders in the corporate and philanthropic community in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro area.
  • Thought leader for diversifying the organizations revenue streams through non-traditional sources such as grants public funding volunteerism and non-traditional fee generation.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Occasional evening and weekend availability may be required for community events
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors degree (required) Masters degree (preferred) from a four-year accredited college or university.
  • 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in not-for-profit fundraising including major giving and corporate relations/giving.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Mobility to move around an active classroom and school grounds
