Job Description

Job Title: Assistant Principal

Wage/Hour Status:Exempt

Department: Assigned Campus and Level

Reports To:Principal

Approved By: Board of Trustees

SUMMARY:

Assist the school principal in overall administration of instructional program and campus level operations. Coordinate assigned student activities and services.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Masters degree required

Three years experience as a classroom teacher

CERTIFICATES LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:

Certified Principal (required)

Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) appraiser (preferred)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Management

  1. Participate in development and evaluation of educational programs.
  2. Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  3. Promote the use of technology in teaching/learning process.
  4. Observe in the classroom for program implementation and provide written feedback.

School/Organizational Climate

  1. Promote a positive caring climate for learning.
  2. Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  3. Communicate effectively with students and staff.

School/Organizational Improvement

  1. Participate in development of campus improvement plans with staff parents and community members.
  2. Help principal develop maintain and use information systems to maintain and records to track progress on campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators.

Personnel Management

  1. Observe employee performance record observations and conduct evaluation conferences. Serve as second appraiser for designated teacher appraisal system.
  2. Assist principal in interviewing selecting and orienting new staff.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management

  1. Supervise operations in principals absence.
  2. Help plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules teacher assignments and extracurricular activity schedules.
  3. Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with attendance clerk on documented program needs.
  4. Work with department heads and faculty to compile annual budget requests based on documented program needs.
  5. Requisition supplies textbooks and equipment; check inventory; maintain records; and verify receipts for materials.
  6. Assist with safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
  7. Coordinate transportation custodial cafeteria and other support services.
  8. Comply with federal and state laws State Board of Education rule and board policy.

Student Management

  1. Ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods.
  2. Help to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior.
  3. Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
  4. Conduct conferences on student and school issues with parents students and teachers.

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.

School/Community Relations

  1. Articulate the schools mission to community and solicit its support in realizing mission.
  2. Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  3. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

Other

  2. Participate in meetings and special events as assigned.
  3. Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work meetings and appointments.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts interest commissions proportions percentages area circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough understanding of school operations. Ability to coordinate campus support operations. Ability to interpret data. Knowledge of curriculum and instruction. Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit occasionally walk and stand talk or hear and travel from one building to another or to other sites. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. Light to moderate lifting is required.

This position requires meeting deadlines with severe constraints interacting with the public and staff and enduring irregular or extended work hours

The employee must maintain emotional control under stress.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job the employee works with frequent interruptions. The noise level in this environment is quiet to loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day and the location of the activity.
