Brief Job Overview

The USP Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) team seeks to continuously move medicine manufacturing into the future through practical applications and solutions in advanced manufacturing and analytical technologies that increase medicine quality strengthen supply chain resiliency and improve the efficiency and sustainability of manufacturing. The AMT team helps make drugs in new ways test the quality of drugs in new ways and build more efficient sustainable and competitive industries both in the US and around the globe. To do this work the AMT team brings together expertise in chemistry biologics engineering data science economics business and regulatory sciences.

The Director for Sustainable Manufacturing brings actionable environmental sustainability expertise to the AMT team and the broader Global Health and Manufacturing Services Division. In this role the incumbent is responsible for coordinating planning and executing programs focused on development and deployment of advanced manufacturing and analytical technologies to reduce carbon footprints reduce manufacturing costs and waste and enhance resilience and sustainability of regional manufacturing. The incumbents inaugural donor-funded work will play a critical role in advancing a climate-smart product strategy representing a foundational investment at the nexus of regional health product manufacturing and climate action in Africa. Finally the incumbent will develop collaborative partnerships with external organizations to advance the work of USP in the sustainable manufacturing sector through deployment of AMTs.

This is a Fixed Term assignment for 4 Years

As part of our mission to advance scientific rigor and public health standards you will play a vital role in increasing global access to high-quality medicines through public standards and related programs. USP prioritizes scientific integrity regulatory excellence and evidence-based decision-making to ensure health systems worldwide can rely on strong tested and globally relevant quality standards.

Additionally USPs People and Culture division in partnership with the Equity Office invests in leadership and workforce development to equip all employees with the skills to create high-performing inclusive teams. This includes training in equitable management practices and tools to promote engaged collaborative and results-driven work environments.

The Director for Sustainable Manufacturing has the following responsibilities:

  • Donor-funded program execution.
    • Provide leadership for the management and implementation of climate and environmental impact activities for donor-funded projects in coordination with the Project Director.
    • Provide subject matter expertise on the development evaluation and monitoring of the environmental impact of pharmaceutical manufacturing.
    • Generate valuable insights into the technical financial and regulatory feasibility of climate-smart approaches.
    • Assess stakeholder readiness market barriers and enabling conditions for specific projects and to inform the broader climate and health agenda.
    • Assess carbon lifecycle emissions and decarbonization levels for target products and manufacturers to support low-carbon active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and finished pharmaceutical product manufacturing.
    • Conduct climate vulnerability assessments for target products and manufacturers while identifying solutions to enhance climate resilience.
    • Leverage expertise to support API process optimization and technology transfer for target medicines to reduce costs carbon emissions and areas of environmental impact.
    • Conduct programs to advance sustainable packaging materials to reduce their carbon footprint minimize waste and contribute to a circular economy in drug manufacturing.
    • Build business cases to enable investments in climate-smart regional manufacturing.
  • Develop and execute a strategic plan for building USPs capabilities in sustainable manufacturing through use of advanced manufacturing and advanced analytical testing systems.
    • Engage externally to understand the needs and challenges of industry donors and government stakeholders as it relates to sustainable manufacturing.
    • Execute on a technical key opinion leader strategy through in-person and online channels.
    • Develop and disseminate specialized knowledge and expert viewpoints on the intersection of environmental sustainability and advanced manufacturing of medicines.
    • Builds and maintains relationships valuable clients and funders focusing on long-term partnerships that drive expansion of AMT-enabled sustainable manufacturing.

Who is USP Looking For

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of our mission commitment to excellence through inclusive and equitable behaviors and practices ability to quickly build credibility with stakeholders along with the following competencies and experience:

  • Bachelors degree and fifteen (15) years of related experience; masters degree and ten (10) years of related experience; or Ph.D. (or equivalent advanced degree) and five (5) years of related experience.
  • Experience in developing and executing on a long-term strategic growth plan.
  • Demonstrated success in evaluating a drug manufacturing process to generate insights into the technical financial and regulatory feasibility of new manufacturing modalities.
  • Strong critical thinking business acumen and scientific literacy.
  • Communications skills both written and oral.
  • Ability to develop and deliver scientific data to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Desire to affect change and drive public health impact.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally 25% of the time.

Additional Desired Preferences

  • Preferred degrees in chemistry chemical engineering environmental engineering and/or environmental science and/or business.
  • Working knowledge of an advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing technology (e.g. flow chemistry continuous manufacturing etc.).
  • Experience working with donors and partners in low-to-middle income regions
  • Fluency in French Portuguese or Spanish.

None this is an individual contributor role.

Compensation
Base Salary Range: USD $161000.00 $214500.00annually.
Target Annual Bonus: % Varies based on level of role.
Individual compensation packages are based on various factors unique to each candidates skill set experience qualifications equity and other job-related reasons.
