Job Description

Summary Statement

An incumbent in this position works under the direction of the Court Administrator of the Delaware Supreme Court. This position is categorized as confidential under the Judicial Branch Personnel Rules which means that the employee serves at the pleasure of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The employee will serve as the Executive Director of the Board of Bar Examiners (BBE) with hands on responsibility for the daily administrative activities of this entity including supervision of staff. The incumbent will work closely with the Chair and Vice Chair of the BBE and with the Supreme Courts Liaison Justice to draft implement and enforce the BBEs rules and policies. The employee is responsible for all aspects of administering the Bar application process the Bar Examination the Bar Examination grading process posting of Bar Examination results and the approval process for admission to the Bar of the Delaware Supreme Court. The employee will also have full administrative responsibilities for BBE operations including decision-making concerning applicants compliance with BBE rules and policies.

In addition the employee will manage staff responsible for the daily activities of the Lawyers Fund for Client Protection (LFCP) and the Commission on Continuing Legal Education (CLE) and will be responsible for managing the business operations of these entities. The employee is responsible for a wide range of legal and administrative duties including but not limited to conducting legal research drafting legal and administrative memoranda and correspondence drafting policies reports and other documents and performing such other legal and administrative duties as assigned by the Court.

Essential Functions

  • All duties associated with administering the Delaware Bar Exam held biannually in February and July.
  • Supervision of Assistant Directors and support staff for BBE CLE and LFCP.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Graduation from an ABA accredited law school and a minimum of two years of work experience as an attorney.
  2. Must be a member in good standing of the Delaware Bar.
  3. Experience managing an organization including fiscal operations.
  4. Excellent research and writing skills.
  5. Experience in interpreting laws rules regulations standards policies and procedures.
  6. Strong leadership skills with the ability to supervise and motivate staff.
  7. Exceptional organizational analytical and problem-solving skills.
  8. Ability to coordinate oversee and follow through on work assignments to obtain desired results including multiple tasks assigned simultaneously.

Conditions of Hire

  • A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire.
  • Direct deposit of paychecks is required as a condition of hire.
