GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Campus Public Safety Officers identify crime security and safety risks in and around the university campuses and initiate appropriate action to remove or reduce those risks. Performs varied assignments related to enforcement of laws rules regulations and policies and provides security safety and emergency response services to students faculty and staff. Must be Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) certified or eligible.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Patrols buildings and grounds on foot bicycle or with a university vehicle to ensure a safe and healthy environment
  • Enforce University rules regulations and policies as well as Oregon State laws
  • Follow up and/or investigate on policy violations or injury/accidents
  • Complete duty logs incident reports and related forms
  • Testify and present evidence in university conduct process as well as in state courts
  • Secures and opens buildings
  • Provide authorized access to university facilities during hours of operation and when the University is closed
  • Responds to fire and intrusion alarm activations
  • Keeps informed on campus activities and provide information to students faculty staff and visitors
  • Responds to complaints disturbances threatening or intimidating interactions and calls for assistance. Determines best course of action to ensure the peace and safety of the University community.
  • Responds to emergencies and provides medical assistance and fire protection
  • Maintains a friendly supportive and service relationship with students faculty staff and local emergency service personnel
  • Communicates effectively both verbal and writing including use of two-way radio telephone and in face-to-face contacts
  • Provide escort service in vehicle and on foot for campus population as requested
  • Provides motorist assistance to campus population
  • Issue citations for vehicles illegally parked on University property
  • Actively engages campus community in addressing public safety concerns
  • Schedule overtime that has 2 or more weeks notice will be considered a mandatory shift or extra hours and an expectation that you will work

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

  • Perform other related duties as required by the Campus Public Safety Manager Supervisor or Director of Facilities Management and CPS

JOB SCOPE

  • Reports to the Campus Public Safety Manager or Supervisor
  • Provides 24-hour service of a critical and often emergent nature acting as the first point of contact for university officials

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High school education or equivalent required some post-secondary education preferred
  • Two years prior experience in campus public safety security services emergency medical services law enforcement safety control or an emergency service-oriented field
  • Experience with window-based computers and a variety of software
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management
  • Demonstrate ability to work with minimal supervision handle multiple priorities and maintain confidentiality

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES & BEHAVIORS

  • Must possess a valid Oregon Drivers License. Driving record should not reflect excessive moving violations during the past three years.
  • Must hold a certification as an Oregon Private Security Provider or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
  • Preferred experience with access control and CCTV
  • Experience with smartphones and apps
  • Ability to read write and follow oral and written directions and instructions in English language
  • Ability to follow University and department policies standard operating procedures and directives
  • Ability to analyze situations adopt an effective course of action and see it through to completion
  • Ability to make immediate judgment decisions in criminal non-criminal and other emergency situations
  • Ability to work with persons from diverse educational economic and cultural backgrounds as well as persons with disabilities and mobility challenges
  • Uses effective communication skills taking into consideration verbal and non-verbal cues cultural nuances active listening techniques (including paraphrasing and clarifying questions) and individual communication styles when interacting with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and handle contact with individuals who may be emotionally distressed and/or are exhibiting behavior concerns
  • Ability to accurately document all shift activities and write clear and detailed report
  • Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated customer service skills
  • Establish rapport with members of a diverse campus community establishing partnerships and exchange of ideas and information used to address campus community problems
  • Must have or have ability to obtain First Aid CPR and AED certification
  • Ability to work varied shifts/weekends overtime and emergency basis
  • Properly maintains vehicles equipment and duty gear
  • Foster an equitable diverse and inclusive work environment
  • Takes responsibility to eliminate the source of problems
  • Demonstrates confidentiality regarding information pertaining to all students faculty and staff
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a team environment
  • Maintains proper appearance and personal conduct for a Campus Public Safety Officer

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is primarily mobile and requires almost continual movement from one location to another for patrol purposes. Running may be required in emergency situations and ability to ride a bicycle is required. Exposure to various weather conditions is constant and year-round. Requires work on weekends and nights and overtime.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & ACTIVITIES

This position has physical requirements that range from sedentary through to very heavy; including climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching crawling reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting grasping talking hearing and repetitive motion.
