Job Description

The Laurel School District is seeking qualified applicants for the position(s) of Teacher on Special Assignment Special Education Coordinator for the 2025-2026 school year.

The Teacher on Special Assignment Special Education Building Coordinator works under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Student Services in collaboration with the building principals. The coordinator serves as a resource and mentor to special education personnel building administration students and families to assist in the coordination of special education programs at the building level and to ensure that due process rights of students and their parents are protected. In addition the coordinator ensures compliance to established policies procedures and/or regulations; and addressing other duties and processes required to maintain the districts program of services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Montana Educator License or related (e.g. Administration Special Education Supervisor and School Psychology)
  • Ability to analyze data to inform work and decision making analyze and evaluate available data assess student needs and develop and implement procedures and policies to support student achievement.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in special education or a related area.
  • Minimum two years of professional experience in a school setting.
  • Be able to get along with adults and children.
  • Be able to make sound decisions on a consistent basis.
  • Ability to write reports and effectively communicate in written and oral form.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond appropriately to inquiries from students parents staff and community.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and effectively manage time and responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of employment and student matters.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates foresight and examines issues and take the initiative to improve the quality of special education in the schools.
  • Collects program evaluation data analyzes data and makes program recommendations to Director of Student Services.
  • Supports special education and general education personnel with IEP implementation compliance issues and differentiated instruction/assessment.
  • Provides and/or assists in providing professional development activities in order to increase the knowledge and skills of special education staff regular education teachers administration and support staff.
  • Systematically and periodically reviews building caseloads and staffing needs; provides recommendations to Director of Student Services regarding staffing needs and scheduling models.
  • Helps in the management of caseloads and the proper placement of students for referred and identified students as well as providing consultation to clarify the duties and responsibilities of a Special Education Teacher.
  • Consults with Special Education Teachers Director of Student Services and Building Administration to provide assistance regarding special education student behavior issues including the need to develop an FBA Positive Behavior Support Plan Aversive Treatments Plan when to schedule a manifestation meeting determination of least restrictive environment and most appropriate placement continuation of services during disciplinary actions and the creation of appropriate alternatives to suspension and expulsion.
  • Responsible for creating annual and initial IEPs for Special Education Teachers along with administering Woodcock Johnson to all caseload students for initial and re-evaluations.
  • Responsible for all observation and classroom-based assessments for initial evaluations along with attending the initial evaluation report meeting with the Special Education teacher.
  • Refers students and their parents to appropriate specialists special programs or outside agencies; consult and collaborate with school system specialists such as school psychologists and nurses; consult with and refer to community-based resources including psychologists psychiatrists physicians service agencies and others.
  • Helps in the management of caseloads and the proper placement of students for referred and identified students as well as providing consultation to clarify the duties and responsibilities of the case managers.
  • Participate in all IEP 504 meetings parent/teacher conferences professional development activities as directed by the Student Services Director.
  • Advises the building administration and evaluation/IEP teams on dealing with placements independent evaluations and acceptance of non-resident students into the district; reviews all records of transfer students who have had a previous history with special education; assists counselors with building student schedules which are following the IEP after reviewing information with the Director of Student Services.
  • Works cooperatively with the transportation department in planning and delivery of services.
  • Consults with case managers counselors and building administration regarding transition services for incoming and outgoing students. Will attend transition meetings as needed.
  • Compiles with Board policies rules regulations and directives.
  • Trains building staff on special education processes and protocols along with the pre-referral and referral process.
  • Reports cases of suspected child abuse according to state laws.
  • Conducts themselves in a professional ethical and respectful manner at all times.
  • Maintains exemplary confidentiality in all aspects.
