Job Description

Academic Advisor Job Description:

Job Title: Academic Advisor

Reports to: Campus Principal

Department/School: Counseling @ Brewer High School

Position Summary: Advise students and guide the development and completion of each students graduation plan (PGP). The Academic Advisor will directly support students in individual advising exploring career and educational goals and guiding students goal setting organization and planning for academic success and post-secondary readiness.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Masters degree in guidance counseling or school administration*

Valid Texas counseling certificate or administrators certificate

* Only a counselor or an administrator may develop personal graduation plans at the high school level. In addition to a counselor or administrator a teacher or other appropriate individual may develop the plan at the junior high or middle school level. TEC 28.0212 and 28.02121

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of career development

Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Ability to present information in one-on-one small group and large group situations to students parents and district staff

Academic Advisor Responsibilities:

  • Discussing career and educational goals with students.
  • Aiding in the course selection process to ensure progress towards student goals.
  • Review personal graduation plan (PGP) options with individual students and their parent or guardian and monitor progress toward attainment of goals. Help the student to access and make use of proven educational resources innovative methods and other interventions that will accelerate the learning process.
  • Guide individual students to plan monitor and manage the students own educational and career development including providing information about post-secondary opportunities.
  • Displaying an interest in student development.
  • Identifying student strengths and weaknesses.
  • Maintaining updated reports on student progress.
  • Intervening if behavioral or academic abnormalities occur.
  • Connecting students with resources such as counselors or tutors.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of institutional policies.
  • Prepares career flyers and newsletters to distribute to students teachers and parents

Academic Advisor Requirements:

  • A bachelors degree related to education and a masters degree may be preferred.
  • Experience in student counseling development education or a related field.
  • State license or certification.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and updated records concerning student performance.
  • Understanding of institutional policies procedures and resources.
  • A desire to help students in their academic journey from enrollment to graduation.
