Job Description

Job Description: The Director of Student Support Services provides leadership in developing achieving and maintaining quality programming on behalf of the students in Utica Community Schools requiring support under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). This is a 52 week position.

Utica Community Schools is seeking to fill two (2) vacancies for the role of Director of Student Support Services.

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure excellence equity and access for all students.
  • As an instructional leader advocate for and ensure that access to educational programming and Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE) is provided to all students with disabilities.
  • Ensure positive academic and behavioral outcomes for all Special Education students in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to the Individualswith Disabilities Act (IDEA) and the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE)
  • Utilize student achievement data to establish and prioritize instructional outcomes.
  • Promote data driven decision making focused on the improvement of student achievement.
  • Ensure Special Education students are provided instructional opportunitiesthat support and promotetheir success in the general education setting.
  • Provide guidance to schools regarding instructional practices that establish appropriate accommodationsand educational environments for Special Education students
  • Provide supervision evaluation induction mentoring and professional learning for assigned Special Education supervisors.
  • Assume responsibility for all Individualized Education Programs Section 504 Plans reports records and other documents legally or otherwise required.
  • Remain informed of legal requirements governing Special Education and ensure that secondary staff and programs are in compliance.
  • Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development; for keeping current with the literature new research findings and research based techniques; and attending professional meetings and conferences.
  • Work collaboratively with the Employee Services Department on recruiting interviewing hiring training and evaluating all assigned Special Education personnel.
  • Partner with the Employee Services Department to monitor assignments certification and highly qualified status for all Special Education personnel.
  • Assist with the coordination of services to meet the needs of students with IEPs requiring transportation.
  • Support the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning with planning facilitating and evaluation of professional development for relevant staff.
  • Maintain regular contact with district administrators school-based administrators and Special Education staff by way of meetings correspondence personal contact and appropriate in-service training.
  • Report regularly to the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning on any developments issues or concerns within the schools and programs.
  • Make recommendations regarding necessary adjustments to the delivery of Special Education programs and services.
  • Visit on a regular basis all Special Education programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Valid administrative certificate required
  • A Masters Degree or higher required
  • Full approval in at least one area of special education
  • Three years of successful practice or administrative experience in special education
  • Ability to meet the requirements for Full or Temporary approval as a Special Education Director as required by Rule 340.1771.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students staff administration parents community and Board of Education.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with various employee groups.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Understanding of technology and its application to the operational functions of a public-school district.
  • Strong organizational skills with outstanding attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated successful administrative supervisory or managerial experience.
