SUMMARY: Provide students and staff a safe and properly maintained environment in which to learn and develop. Apprentice will learn the trades to become certified and move into a skilled maintenance position when available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Apprentice will generally work with skilled maintenance but will be assigned some tasks individually. Responsibilities shall include but not be limited to the following:

  • Maintains cleans and adjusts heating and air conditioning units exhaust systems blowers pumps and condensers generators air compressors and other such equipment as associated with HVAC systems.
  • Performs preventative maintenance as directed and keeps accurate records.
  • Diagnosis trouble and performs assembly disassembly and adjustments on a variety of electrical equipment repairing and replacing motors switches contracts relays solenoids electric tools light fixtures ballasts heating elements in furnaces energy management system and other electrical work.
  • Diagnosis and trouble shoots breakdowns. Disassemble locate worn or broken parts and replace on all types of equipment.
  • Read schematics layout lighting circuits and wire up machinery.
  • Performs mechanical maintenance on equipment. Replace defective or worn out parts including gears shafts bearings belts chains etc.
  • Maintains existing plumbing and fixtures and installs new plumbing fixtures.
  • Cleans and drains clogged sewer lines.
  • Performs maintenance work on all doors windows latches defective closing and locking mechanisms; repair replace and return in good working order.
  • Performs replacement work such as changing ceiling titles floor tiles base coverings carpeting paneling etc.
  • Maintains repairs and replaces desks chairs stools. Performs maintenance and repair work on a variety of building items such as masonry carpentry roof patching etc.
  • Keeps work area and equipment clean and in an orderly condition.
  • Makes time available when called upon in emergency situations to work other than their normal working hours if essential to do so.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance and Facilities Assistant Director of Maintenance or assigned Skilled Maintenance Technician.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with students employees community members and vendors.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must provide documentation of the following requirements:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Requires a working knowledge and experience preferred in carpentry plumbing general building maintenance electrical and HVAC.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC).
  • Must have a valid Arizona drivers license with clean driving record.

SKILL/KNOWLEDGE:

  • Read and interpret general documents such as employee handbooks and safety/training manuals.
  • Write general correspondence and speak effectively with others.
  • Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals.
  • Interpret assortment of instructions furnished in variable forms.
  • Apply reason to research and solve moderately complex issues with little or no assistance.

ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching crawling reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting fingering grasping feeling talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts electrical currents vibration etc.); moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes odors dusts gases poor ventilation etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals blood and other body fluids); and moderate exposure to extreme temperatures inadequate lighting movement restrictions and intense noise.
