Position Summary

The Program Chair develops plans implements and administers goals and objectives related to the assigned program(s) including quality course and program curriculum planning and reports directly to the Associate Dean.

The Program Chair works in consultation with the Associate Dean and other faculty to ensure academic excellence and learner success within the context of the Bow Valley College strategic plan.

Additionally the Program Chair helps to ensure effective communication and coordination between the activities of the Schools and programs and with internal college stakeholders and external bodies as relevant. Also provides operational and academic leadership support to the programs faculty and learners in consultation with the Associate Dean.

Position responsibilities and accountabilities include but are not limited to:

The Program Chair at the Chiu School of Business plays a key leadership role in fostering a collaborative supportive and high-performing academic environment. This role is responsible for promoting a positive team culture by developing strong relationships across the program department and College. The Chair provides mentoring coaching and guidance to faculty and staff ensuring alignment with school and departmental goals and maintaining open channels of communication among instructors Program Chairs Associate Deans and other College departments.

They lead regular meetings provide program and curriculum orientation and support faculty recruitment and onboarding efforts in collaboration with the Associate Dean. The Program Chair is a key liaison with advisory committees and internal stakeholders supporting initiatives that enhance instructional quality and learner success.

In collaboration with the Associate Dean the Chair contributes to program maintenance development and evaluation. This includes supporting curriculum updates facilitating program reviews managing scheduling and faculty teaching assignments and ensuring compliance with College policies and accreditation requirements.

The Chair promotes instructional best practices and excellence in teaching while maintaining accurate program documentation and records. They are also actively involved in learner engagementwelcoming new students providing guidance addressing learner concerns and supporting the appeals process. The Program Chair works closely with faculty to create learner support plans uphold academic integrity and participate in student recognition initiatives including awards and achievement celebrations.

The Chair also oversees the ongoing assessment and development of curriculum to ensure alignment with academic standards industry expectations and adult learning principles. They contribute to the design of learning outcomes review course schedules and help maintain consistency across the program. The role involves liaising with curriculum committees subject matter experts and other program chairs to promote shared courses learner pathways and inter-professional education opportunities. The Chair remains informed of sector trends and integrates relevant developments into the program to maintain relevance and innovation.

Externally the Program Chair represents the Chiu School of Business and Bow Valley College in meetings with business sectors government agencies professional associations and community organizations. They contribute to marketing and promotional efforts and maintain strong relationships with internal departments. Additionally the Chair supports and may participate in applied research activities helping to build the schools capacity in this area.

As a model of professionalism and lifelong learning the Program Chair articulates and pursues personal development goals while also delivering quality instruction in assigned courses. This includes developing lesson plans updating curriculum assessing learner performance and maintaining accurate academic records. Through this multifaceted role the Program Chair supports the overall excellence growth and reputation of the program and the College.



Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree.
  • Masters degree depending on program accreditation.
  • Five years experience in a post-secondary environment with experience both in teaching and preferably academic program leadership; experience in the area of applied research would be considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree.
  • A commitment to learner-centred learning and outcomes-based education.
  • Sound knowledge of program content and curriculum development.
  • Knowledge of and experience in curriculum development learner recruitment learner retention and success factors conflict resolution.
  • Collaborative innovative and transparent style.
  • Passionate about leading the advancement of programming and excellence in teaching.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively with faculty and interdisciplinary groups across campus.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Ability to convey a professional image and represent the organization in the community and with all stakeholders

This opening is a 3 -year Project Faculty position. Please note all successful candidates will be required to provide copies of government issued identification and proof of educational qualifications upon hire and may be required to provide an enhanced police information check.
