Job Description Whole Child Nurse

Title:Whole Child Nurse

Department:Office of Superintendent

Classification:Licensed Staff

Supervised by:Program Director/Superintendent

Work Year:190 Days or as assigned by Superintendent

Job Purpose Statement:

School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being academic success and life-long achievement of students. The purpose of the nurse in schools is to facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation self-management self-advocacy and learning.

Job Qualifications Licensure Certification:

    • Registered Nurse through the Oregon State Board of Nursing
    • Possession of or ability to qualify for an Oregon School Nurse license through Teachers Standard and Practices Commission (TSPC).
    • Bachelors Degree (preferred) Masters Degree (preferred) in Public Health Nursing Nutrition/Dietetics Social Work Health Education Public Administration or other similar field or related professional experience
    • Minimum of 1 year of public health community school or pediatric nursing (preferred)
    • Certified in CPR or BLS

  • Ability to communicate in Spanish (written and verbal) -preferred

  • Classroom teaching experience- preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Principles and practices underlying professional nursing.
  • Principles and practices underlying the special field of school health.
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing and of literature in the fields of school health.
  • Organization and administration of other cooperating agencies.
  • State and local laws relating to health and social issues.
  • Participate cooperatively in a program of school health nursing.
  • Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
  • Communicate appropriately collaboratively and effectively with students parents administrators other school personnel health care providers and community agencies.
  • Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
  • Organize a health office and manage time.
  • Be a self-starter or self-motivated.
  • Use a computer and various software applications.
  • Maintain records confidentiality and comply with HIPPA and FERPA as needed.




Essential Job Functions:

  1. Promotes and protects the optimal health status of children ages 0-21
  2. Provides health assessments
  3. Obtains a health history
  4. Screens and evaluates findings of deficit in vision hearing growth etc.
  5. Observes the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment.
  6. Identifies abnormal health findings.
  7. Develops and implements a student health plan
  8. Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel.
  9. Initiates referral to parents school personnel or community health resources for intervention remediation and follow through.
  10. Provides ongoing health counseling with students parents school personnel or health agencies.
  11. Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students.
  12. Maintains evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
  13. Plans and implements school health management protocols
  14. Participates in home visits when indicated to assess the family needs as related to the childs health.
  15. Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses.
  16. Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases.
  17. Provides health education and anticipatory guidance
  18. Provides direct health education and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that affect health.
  19. Participates in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health.
  20. Serves as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction.
  21. Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home school and community.
  22. Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers.
  23. Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and nursing practices.
  24. Provides consultation in the formation of health policies goals and objectives for the school district.
  25. Where applicable participates in the IFSP and IEP plan development.
  26. Provides training in delegable duties to district staff
  27. Works with other nurses district staff and community partners to provide in person and telehealth services.
  28. Follows record keeping protocols and procedures that comply with both HIPPA and FERPA as required
  29. Assist with the Medicaid claiming process and submit claiming information.
  30. Other Duties as Assigned

Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting

As mandatory reporter (ORS.419b.010) you are required to immediately report to Law Enforcement and or Department of Human Services any instances of suspected child abuse.
