Job Description: The College and Career Advisor is responsible for creating implementing and coordinating the college the Life After ARHS programming at Amherst Regional High School. Approximately 80% of ARHS graduates go directly to a 4-year college 10% go directly to a two-year college and 10% go directly to work or a vocational program.
- College Counseling Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the counseling staff to understand the needs and interests of students
- Deliver classroom college and career lessons related to post-high school planning to second semester juniors and first semester seniors
- Provide on-going individual counseling through Meetings with juniors and parents/guardians in the spring and seniors with parents/guardians in the fall (and spring when necessary.)
- Share recommendation writing for seniors with counselors and advise faculty in their writing of recommendations
- Hold Office Hours in the Future Center
- Hold FlexBlock lesson and support for Life After ARHS
- Prepare informational handouts/handbooks for juniors and seniors
- Write informational emails for juniors and seniors throughout the school year
- Create Life After ARHS timelines and checklists for students in grades 11 and 12
- Coordinate college planning information systems for student faculty and guardian usage
- Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with college admissions counselors
- Coordinate personal statement support in 11th grade classrooms
- Supervise MEFA Pathway and MyCAP implementation for grades 9-12
- Offer ALPS quarter-long courses for 11th and 12th graders
- Host events such as College Planning Roundtable Financial Aid Night Career Exploration Fair and the like
- Coordinate MA College Application Celebration in December
- Support students internship search
- Collaborate with ICP program facilitator
- Host trips to local colleges and college fairs
- Host college admissions representatives on campus each fall
- Coordinate the scholarship committee
- Coordinate scholarship opportunities and properly promote them for the benefit of students
- Organize and present or host informational evening events related to the college application process including financial aid and a FAFSA Night
- Plan field trips to community colleges
- Work with ELL department to provide workshops for ELL and other underrepresented students.
- Work with special education liaisons to ensure that students with IEPs and their families are well advised
- Attend position-related conferences (example NEACAC NACAC or College Board conferences)
- Attend weekly and monthly meetings with the school counseling staff
- Provide GAP Year information
- Maintain Google Classrooms for grades 11 and 12
Career planning responsibilities:
- For students not applying to college identify their areas of strengths and interests
- Help these students identify career training programs and/or apply for jobs
- Collaborate with the transition (sic) counselor to support students pursuing vocational programs or going directly into the workforce
