Job Description

Job Title: Athletic Trainer

Reports to: Campus Principal

Dept.: Athletics and Assigned Campus

Exemption Status:Exempt/Professional

Pay Scale: AP2

Calendar: 203 Days

Primary Purpose:

HS Athletic Trainer will plan coordinate and supervise all components of athletic training for student athletes. Partnering with another ATC under the direction of the team physician to carry out activities in

the following areas: prevention evaluation emergency treatment physical reconditioning and

rehabilitation of injuries. Coordinate the selection training and supervision of student assistants in the

Sports Medicine Program.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Valid license from Texas Advisory Board Athletic Trainers (LAT)
  • Certified to teach the TSATA Sports Medicine I and II Innovative Courses (or willing to get certified this summer by TSATA)
  • Current Adult CPR and AED Certification for a Healthcare Provider (BLS)
  • NATABOC Certification (preferred)
  • Texas Secondary Teacher Certification (preferred)
  • CPR/FA/AED certified instructor or willing to become a certified instructor (preferred)


Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Possesses the ability to:
    • Provide injury care prevention injury rehabilitation and emergency care for athletic injuries
    • use therapeutic modalities and be knowledgeable of their protocols
    • instruct and supervise student athletes and student assistants.
  • Strong communication organizational and interpersonal skills with students staff & the community.
  • Compliance with the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and Texas State Athletic Trainers Association (TSATA) guidelines.


Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Plan and implement a comprehensive athletic injury and illness prevention program for student athletes.
  2. Attend practice sessions and athletic contests as assigned by athletic director.
  3. Establish and maintain effective communication with students parents medical and paramedical personnel coaches and other staff.
  4. Provide physical conditioning training to student athletes.
  5. Fit injured athletes with specialized equipment and oversee its use. Prepare athletes for
  6. games and practices by conducting evaluations and using tape wraps splints braces and
  7. other protective devices as needed.
  8. Respond to emergencies and make quick independent judgments about how to deal with injuries.
  9. Identify acute injuries and provide first-aid triage including assessing injuries and deciding whether an athlete should seek further medical attention and should discontinue participation in the athletic event
  10. Establish specific procedures to be carried out by a coach or student trainer in the event of a medical emergency.
  11. Detect and resolve environmental risks to athletes.
  12. Plan and put in place a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning program for injuries and illnesses sustained by student athletes.
  13. Determine therapeutic goals and objectives for individual athletes.
  14. Apply therapeutic modalities and instruct athletes on proper use of exercise equipment.
  15. Evaluate and record rehabilitation progress of athletes. Develop criteria for progression and return to practice and competition.
  16. Follow professional ethical and legal parameters regarding use of drugs and therapeutic agents for treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes.
  17. Coordinate scheduling of athletic physical examinations and screening.
  18. Select train and supervise student assistants.
  19. Compile maintain and file all physical and computerized reports records and other documents including medical accident and treatment records as required.
  20. Maintain an inventory of training supplies and equipment. Requisition additional supplies as needed.
  21. Performs other duties as assigned

Tools/Equipment Used: Exercise equipment and devices including stationary bike pulleys weights whirlpool paraffin bath ultrasound equipment and cold packs; automated external defibrillator (AED)

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Continual walking; moderate reaching

Lifting: Frequently moderate lifting or carrying (15-44 pounds)

Environment: Work outside (exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather) and inside; exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards bacteria and communicable diseases; frequent district wide and statewide travel; work must be completed onsite

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent prolonged and irregular hours
