Description

Methodist University is seeking to hire an experienced creative forward-thinking student-focused medical education director for its new School of Medicine in Fayetteville NC. The Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine is an LCME candidate program with an anticipated start date of Summer 2026 for its charter class. Our mission is to prepare our graduates to be socially accountable community-engaged evidence-based compassionate equity-focused physician leaders who will contribute to mitigating health disparities and improving health outcomes in southeastern NC or wherever they may practice. The medical education director is part of the Office of Academic Affairs and reports directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic position requires leadership skills a deep understanding of undergraduate medical education curriculum delivery and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced dynamic environment. The position also includes supporting faculty with some instructional design responsibilities including developing delivering and evaluating learning content and assessments for our spirally integrated clinical presentation curriculum. This individual must understand and use best-practice educational pedagogies and instructional design theories and possess independent critical thinking skills to support the needs of the Academic Affairs office.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management:

    • Lead multiple complex medical education and curriculum-related projects ensuring completion on time within scope and alignment with institutional goals educational best practices and LCME standards.
    • Oversee complex student scheduling for various experiential learning activities.
    • Analyze advise and consult with the Office of Academic Affairs team on strategic and operational planning goals and/or areas for improvement.
    • Oversee relevant staff as applicable.

Curriculum Support and Implementation:

    • Participate in the development support and implementation of high-quality accessible learning activities and assessments across all years of the spirally integrated clinical presentation curriculum.
    • Assist in ensuring curriculum is evidence-based up-to-date and aligned with accreditation standards.
    • Participate in establishing an ongoing process for curriculum mapping.

Educational Pedagogy and Instructional Design:

    • Apply instructional design principles to create engaging and effective learning materials.
    • Incorporate adult learning theories and principles to develop learning modules to support diverse learning styles.
    • Provide evidence-based guidance for assessment tools rubrics and metrics. and problem-solving skills.
    • Foster an inclusive learning environment that supports the academic and professional growth of all students.

Assessment and Evaluation:

    • Support and implement assessment strategies to measure educational outcomes and program effectiveness.
    • Analyze data to inform continuous improvement of educational programs and compliance with LCME standards.
    • Design and implement assessment tools to measure student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.
    • Analyze assessment data to inform continuous improvement of instructional materials and teaching methods.
    • Export and analyze data from NBME assessments.
    • Develop processes to ensure comparability across clinical sites.
    • Support the Assistant Dean for Assessment in conducting and analyzing course and teaching evaluations for continuous course and program improvement.

Faculty Support:

    • Collaborate with subject matter experts to implement pedagogical strategies that focus on session objectives and outcomes promote active learning critical thinking and integrate foundational health system and clinical sciences.
    • Support subject content experts to design and develop effective high-quality educational content that aligns with best practices accreditation standards and institutional goals.
    • Collaborate with the Office of Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs to provide training and support for faculty in instructional design and best practices in medical education.
    • Foster a culture of continuous professional development and lifelong learning.
    • Encourage faculty to adopt innovative teaching methods and technologies.

Research and Scholarship:

    • Proactively research emerging technologies to meet evolving teaching and learning demands.
    • Conduct and support research related to medical education.

Qualifications

  • Masters or terminal degree in relevant field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in medical education.
  • Strong understanding of undergraduate medical education instructional design principles and pedagogical strategies.
  • Excellent communication collaboration and organizational skills.
  • Experience with curriculum development and accreditation processes.
  • Strong knowledge of learner-centered instructional design principles curriculum development and adult learning theories.
  • Experience with ExamSoft Canvas and AcuityOne45 is desirable.
