Job Description

Position: Museum Coordinator

Department: Arts & Cultural Department

Employment Status: Non - Exempt

Schedule: 8:00AM-5:00PM Monday - Friday (Flexible with some nights and weekends required)

Compensation: Grade:5 Step:1 Starting Salary $19.59/hr

Position Summary

Works under the supervision of the Museum Manager and is reviewed for compliance with established procedures while working and through review after assignment completion and evaluation of the same.

The Museum Coordinator is responsible for supporting in the general management of the Morgantown History Museum (MHM) and Easton Roller Mill (ERM) including programs staffing exhibitions research partnerships volunteers and external relations. The Museum Coordinator works closely with the Museum Manager in assisting with the strategic direction of the Museum and helps implement the Museums exhibitions tours research projects collections management educational activities volunteer coordination and community outreach.

Primary responsibilities include the day-to-day operations and administration of the museum and mill collection and exhibition interface with visitors and coordinates volunteers or PT staff.

The Coordinator assists the Museum Manager in issues related to the maintenance of the facilities and optimizing the buildings care and use. The Coordinator uses administrative processes and procedures to enhance the museums and mills operations other museums and historic sites and members of the public. He or she is expected to take an active role in monitoring public history trends and recommending appropriately.


Essential Duties - Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

  • Assists the Manager to develop programs exhibitions and services to fulfill the mission of the Museum and increase local and statewide awareness and usage of MHM & ERM.
  • Under the direction of the Museum Manager assist with the day-to-day operations of the museum and mill and the related exhibitions tours research projects collection management educational activities volunteer coordination and community outreach.
  • Make recommendations on the operations programs communications and community services to enhance the efficiency and community impact of the museum and mill.
  • Assist Museum Manager with the development and implementation of communications marketing and graphic design work related to museum and mill programs and services.
  • Develop and make recommendations on programming events partnerships and other opportunities for the Morgantown History Museum and Easton Roller Mill.
  • Serves as a liaison to guest services staff and volunteers.
  • Works closely with the Museum Manager and the Friends of Morgantown History Museum to support fundraising activities.
  • Research and help establish partnerships in the community to enhance the public image and expand interest and support for museum facilities and programs.
  • Work closely with the Museum Manager on communications plans.


Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Mostly office work. Be able assist with load in of artifacts and exhibition components. Help move display cases and other items. Ability to lift 35lbs.
  • Work in off site locations such as Easton Roller Mill in dusty outdoor areas.


Use of Technology & Equipment

  • Equipment used on a regular basis includes personal computer black/white and color photo copiers flatbed scanner calculator digital camera multi-line phone system stage and lighting systems and sound systems. Small tools for exhibition preparation and creation.


Contact & Supervision

  • Position is supervised by the Museum Manager. Coordinator may supervise part time and volunteers.
  • Employee encounters extensive contact with various community groups city departments board members stakeholders volunteers and the general public on a daily basis.

Requirements


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

Requires a bachelors degree in museum studies Library and Information Science History Business Administration Arts and Culture or a closely related field or a combination of education and experience.


Experience:

At least three (3) years of experience in museum or arts management community activities or program administration and operation with some volunteer supervisory experience preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
