Job Description

Description

The Communications Clerk operates a switchboard or telephone console to route incoming calls and place outgoing calls. Pages emergency calls and signals appropriate alerts. The position relies on established guidelines to accomplish tasks and works under close supervision.



Responsibilities
  1. Telephone/Switchboard Skills: This will have been satisfactorily performed when
    1. All calls telephone and mini intercoms are answered in a prompt courteous and efficient manner at all times as evidenced by lack of customer complaints.
    2. All calls are answered within 3 rings and accurately in a courteous calm and professional attitude at all times with no more than one customer complaint.
    3. Working telephone sets are promptly installed for non-working sets and configures the phones operational characteristics efficiently and courteously at all times.
    4. Patient information is given out to appropriate parties while ensuring and protecting patient confidentiality when Information Desk personnel are busy or after hours.
    5. Relieved Information Desk personnel is relieved as needed.
    6. Patient information is looked up in the computer while following appropriate patient confidentiality procedures as evidenced by lack of complaints.
  2. Announcing & Messaging: This will have been satisfactorily performed when
    1. Emergency codes promptly and efficiently paged specific personnel essential to each codes needs are notified and all coded are documented in log at all times.
    2. All codes handled promptly and efficiently. Knowledge of procedures and specific personnel to notify. Promptness confidence and efficiency when handling any code or emergency.
    3. Doctors and personnel on beepers are paged with promptness and efficiency and/or overhead page system used when needed as evidenced by lack of complaints.
    4. Fire alarms medical gas and oxygen indicator alarms and blood bank indicator alarms are monitored. Promptly notifies required personnel and executes emergency procedures when alarm is activated and deactivated.
  3. Other Duties as Assigned: This will have been satisfactorily performed when
    1. Other duties as assigned are completed.


Qualifications
  • Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Good communication/verbal skills ability to multitask basic computer skills
