At a Glance!The Early Learning Center (ELC) is a high quality childcare facility that serves the children of Lower Columbia College faculty staff and students and the community. ELC teachers are a child-centered group with a passion for early childhood.

We are looking for someone who shares the same passion in early childhood and is a self-motivated team player. This individual in this position must be able to communicate effectively with parents peers and children and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

The Mentor Teacher leads a classroom of up to 20 children guiding daily activities mealtimes lesson planning and ongoing assessments. They also partner with families through parent-teacher conferences and family engagement events. In addition to classroom responsibilities the Mentor Teacher supports and mentors Early Childhood Education (ECED) clinical students by tracking attendance providing feedback and conducting quarterly conferences. This role involves close collaboration with families colleagues and community partners to support childrens growth and learning.

This position is an 12 month 40 hours/week position. The classification is Early Childhood Program Specialist 3 under Washington State Classification Specifications. The typical schedule for this position is 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. This position requires in person work.The Mentor Teacher reports directly to the Director of the ELC.

Successful candidates typically start towards the beginning of the salary range and will receive scheduled salary increases.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Functions

Physical Requirements:
Seldom:
  • Pick up children in emergency situations up to 80 lbs. (with assistance)
  • Sit for long periods of time (up to 7 hours) during mandatory trainings
Occasionally:
  • Classroom arrangement including moving furniture
Frequently:
  • Stack chairs
  • Bend over to pick up items and/or assist children
  • Sit either on child-sized chairs or the floor
  • Squat
  • Extended periods of standing
  • Multiple uses of bleach solution for cleaning/sanitizing classroom daily/weekly
  • Maintain sight and sound supervision of up to 18 children with a co-teacher
  • During outside play
  • Lift carrying classroom materials and children (5-25 lbs.)
  • Walk during outside play and off site/campus field trips
  • Care for ill or injured children
Working Conditions
  • Expected to attend evening meetings
  • Expected to attend scheduled meetings with parents/families
  • Provide supervision on regularly scheduled field trips
  • Expected to attend trainings and conferences that pertain to Early Childhood Education
  • Supervise children outside on playground twice a day rain or shine
Skills and Abilities
  • Competence in various curriculum areas such as music art science pre-reading storytelling numeric fluency and language development
  • Skilled in planning organizing scheduling record keeping classroom arrangement and management staff and parent communications
  • Ability to relate effectively with children families community members and staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be able to supervise children by sight and capable of moving quickly in order to prevent possible injury

  • Competency in various curriculum areas such as music art science pre-reading storytelling numeric fluency and language development.
  • Experience working with Creative Curriculum and Teaching Strategies Gold.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Completion of Child Care Basics
  • Passed MERIT portable background check
  • Valid Food Handlers card
  • Valid/current Safe Sleep training
  • Must have valid certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid
