Job Description

Position: Special Education Liaison -Location TBD - based on applicants experience

Reports To: Principal / Designee

Employment Status: Regular/Full-Time

Description: Develops Individual Education Programs (IEPs) conducts and

participates in team meetings and parent conferences.

NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend Professional Development and scheduled meetings with the Special Education /Student Services Assistant Principals
  • Communicate/relay all information from PDs with building staff regarding the information coming from the Special Education/Student Services Department
  • First resource/link for staff questions regarding expectations procedures and policies of the Special Education Department
  • Collaborate directly with the Student Services Assistant Principal and Special Education Department
  • Review progress data and data binders to determine if goals are appropriate and progress is being made. Recommend changes in SDI when progress isnt being made
  • Write compliant and meaningful IEPs for students with disabilities in the building with collaboration with ISs providing services
  • Collaborate with the team including related services to schedule all meetings. If an ETR and IEP meeting will be held at the same time work with the school psychologist to schedule
  • Contact parents for IEP meetings including sending invitations drafts final copies etc.
  • Serve as IEP chairperson during the meetings
  • Monitor print and mail progress reports each quarter
  • Ensure that all district Special Education procedures are followed in a timely manner (change of LRE transportation Alternate Assessment etc.)
  • Participate in the planning implementation and evaluation of specially designed instruction during No New Learning Time Blocks (PAWS) or other blocks of instruction
  • Administer student specific assessments (as allowable) such as transition CTOPP2 TOWRE2 and transition related assessment etc. for identified students
  • Conduct student observations as directed
  • Collect student data for appropriate baseline data for IEP Goal creation
  • Develop and implement behavior management plans for students as needed
  • Maintain a safe environment for all students using crisis intervention techniques if warranted
  • Communicate progress through speech and writing to parents and other school personnel in compliance with state and program policies and procedures
  • Conduct preliminary and ongoing evaluations of student levels and needs through formal and informal means including student specific assessments such as CTOPP2 TOWRE2 and transition assessment
  • Elicit input from parents caseworkers LEA representatives and others involved in student program development
  • Design appropriate goals and objectives for student IEPs based on evaluations and staff and parent input
  • Work cooperatively to develop programming and evaluation through disciplinary teaming approach
  • Provide direction and training to instructor assistants and/or volunteers assigned to the classroom
  • Communicate to instructor assistant information necessary for student program implementation
  • Schedule daily routine for instructor assistants assigned to the classroom
  • Interact in a positive manner with staff students and parents
  • Attend parent/teacher conferences
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information e.g. student grades
  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance attitude and conversation
  • Attend meetings and in-services as required
  • Identify and address inappropriate behaviors through the implementation of positive behavior interventions
  • Attend work regularly and punctually
  • Demonstrate a positive work ethic
  • Work cooperatively with others in small groups
  • Observe ethics of the teaching profession; exhibit professional behavior emotional stability and sound judgment
  • Maintain certification in district adopted positive behavior intervention strategies and restraint/seclusion techniques
  • Ensure student safety

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend staff IEP behavior management team evaluation and curriculum meetings as necessary
  • Work cooperatively with support staff to schedule time for related service evaluation and implementation
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Special Education Supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in education from an accredited college or university
  • Appropriate State of Ohio teaching certifications/license
  • Meet the applicable requirements of a highly qualified teacher under the No Child Left Behind Act within the appropriate timelines
  • Experience and/or training which evidences the ability to instruct severe behaviorally handicapped students
  • Training in Crisis Intervention
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Occasional requirement to travel daily and overnight
  • Occasional interaction among unruly children
  • Occasional recipient of violent outbursts as indicated in a students I.E.P. or E.T.R.
  • Occasional exposure to blood bodily fluids and tissue
  • Occasional requirement to restrain/seclude children for safety concerns
  • Frequent requirement to sit stand walk talk hear see read speak reach stretch with hands and arms crouch kneel climb and stoop
  • Frequent operation of a vehicle in inclement weather conditions i.e. being prepared to come to work on all scheduled work days except calamity days
  • Weekend/evening/summer work
