The Amherst Public School District is currently seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Elementary ClassroomMusicTeacher. The ClassroomMusicTeacher works under the supervision of the Building Principal and is responsible for teachingmusiceducation to pupils in grades K-6 and assists the staff of the school in the improvement and appreciation ofmusicinstruction. The ClassroomMusicteacher supports student growth in their enjoyment appreciation and performance ofmusicthrough a variety of plannedmusicexperiences which include singing moving tomusic playing of instruments and listening and performs other duties directly related to this job description. Successful candidates will have working knowledge of the current Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for the Arts at the elementary school level and demonstrated success working in a collaborative educational setting. All candidates must hold current and valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education certification as an Academic: TeacherMusic: Vocal/Instrumental/General at all levels. DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General:
Teaches skills inmusicunderstanding/appreciation harmony explorations inmusicand choralmusicto elementary students.
Directs grades five and six school chorus.
Supports planning of schoolwide assemblies.
Plans/executes a balancedmusicprogram and organizes class time so that preparation rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt themusiccurriculum to the needs of all students.
Collaborates on a regular basis with non-musicteachers on shared projects and the schools arts-integration curriculum across the building
Encourages students to develop individualmusicalskills to the greatest extent possible.
Utilizes repertoire of all types ofmusicliterature including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
Maintains care/responsibility for school-ownedmusicmusicalinstruments and equipment to prevent loss or abuse. Requests repairs to instruments as required.
Evaluates each pupilsmusicalgrowth performance andmusicalunderstanding. Assesses each individuals contribution to the performance of the group.
Ability to play the piano is an essential and required skill.
Bilingual and bi-cultural candidates are preferred.
Additional Related Duties/Responsibilities:
Selects appropriatemusic books and instructional supports to enhance learning and requisitionsmusicalinstruments and instructional supplies as necessary.
Cooperation with the Building Principal and staff in providingmusicalprograms for school assemblies open house parent meetings and seasonal programs.
Communicates with parents and school staff on individual students progress.
