Job Description

PORTSMOUTH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT JOB DESCRIPTIONTITLE: Two Positions Available: Grade K Elementary General Education Teacher REPORTS TO: Building Administrator DIRECTLY SUPERVISES: N / A(SUMMARY) JOB DESCRIPTION:Under direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conductive to the intellectual physical social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students parents staff and community. Develops selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment materials and facilities. EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:Bachelors Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. In accordance with Rhode Islands Right to Read Act all educators must demonstrate awareness of and/or proficiency in the Science of Reading. Preferred candidates will have completed an approved Right to Read training program or possess current certification of proficiency or awareness. If not already trained the selected candidate must demonstrate a willingness to complete approved training within their first year of employment. CERTIFICATE / LICENSE REQUIRED:Certificate required by the Rhode Island State Department of Education. Current Rhode Island Teacher Certificates in the appropriate subject area and level. Early Childhood PK-3 or Elementary Grades K-6 Certificate is required. Additional certification in Grades K-8 Special Education and/or Reading Specialist is not required but considered optional. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES:1. Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives2. Participates in and implements district and school-based professional development activities3. Plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction demonstration and work time that provides students with opportunities to learn observe question and investigate in alignment with appropriate State and local standards4. Instructs students individually and in groups using various teaching methods such as workshop model discussions and demonstrations5. Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students varying needs and interests6. Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities7. Develops and maintains positive and cooperative interactions and communications with parents colleagues and community8. Monitors and assesses student progress and adjusts student instruction accordingly9. Makes recommendations about appropriate accommodations for all types of formal assessments10. Establishes and maintains standards of students behavior needed to achieve a positive learning environment in the classroom11. Adheres to the Rhode Island Educator Code of Professional Responsibility12. Works collaboratively with peers at the school and district level to improve teaching learning and educational programming for students13. Performs other duties as designated by the building administratorPHYSICAL DEMANDS: and speak at levels to be able to make presentations and exchange information in person and on the telephone so others will be able to clearly understand of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and manipulate paper to read prepare documents and reports and to observe students to meet multiple demands from several people and meet deadlines with severe time constraints or stand for extended periods of time in both indoor and outdoor environments and possible running in order to maintain a safe learning environment to work irregular or extended hours to include a full day and then attending meetings or supervising evening events at a desk conference table small student classroom table or in meetings in various configurations bend at the waist and reach overhead above the shoulders and carrying pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 181 day school yearEVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the RI Model Educator Evaluation & Support ENVIRONMENTThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
