Job Description

We are seeking an individual who is passionate and committed to community work to assist with the planning and delivery of community programs at the Fernwood Neighbourhood House.

Position Type:Temporary Full-time 35hrs/week(Canada Summer Jobs)

Hourly Rate: $20.00/hr

Location: Fernwood Community Centre 1240 Gladstone Avenue

Hours: Full time Contracted Canada Summer Jobs up to 35hrs/week for 8 weeks.

Reports to: Community Programs Lead
Indirect Reporting: Director of Community Programs

About Fernwood Neighbourhood House (FNH)
Fernwood Neighbourhood House (FNH) is a vibrant multi-service organization working on the unceded lkn (Lekwungen) lands in Victoria BC. Were dedicated to fostering an inclusive resilient and connected community by providing a wide range of programs for all ages from childcare and family support to food security initiatives intergenerational programs and community events that celebrate our diverse neighborhood. Position Overview:
The Community Programs Assistant plays a key role in supporting the Community Programs team with the creation planning and delivery of resources and programs. This role will be hands-on and will include co-facilitating existing programming and co-designing/organizing future programming some evening and weekend work may be required. The ideal candidate should have experience in conducting research familiarity with community resources as well as strong communication interpersonal and group facilitation skills.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Support the Delivery and Tracking of Community Programs

  • Support with data collection organization and file digitization.

  • Support with the creation and implementation of data tracking tools and systems.

  • Assist with the preparations set-up and take-down for ongoing community programs.

  • Create and compile resources for current FNH clients.

  • Assist with the creation of promotional materials and social media posts for ongoing community programs.

  • Provide guidance and instructions to program volunteers as needed.

  1. Support the Development of Community Programs Design:

  1. Research effective approaches and practices from other existing community programming.

  1. Participate in designing and developing community programs that are responsive to the identified needs.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Ability to work in a busy fast-paced crowded environment.

  • Ability to prioritize building meaningful and respectful relationships with the diverse youth population in Fernwood community.

  • Strong facilitation communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to collect analyze and interpret data.

  • Demonstrate ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

  • Commitment to full participation in the organizations efforts towards justice equity diversity decolonization and inclusion.

  • Ability to problem-solve prioritize tasks and take initiative.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions take initiative in completing assigned tasks and remain accountable for actions outcomes and work quality.

  • Experience using Canva and social media.


Eligibility Requirements (Canada Summer Jobs):
To be eligible for this position candidates must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.

  • Be a Canadian Citizen permanent resident or person granted refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

  • Be legally entitled to work in British Columbia.

Note: International students are not eligible for this position. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Additional Assets:

  • Either completed or currently pursuing a bachelors degree in social work child and youth work education or a related field OR possess relevant life experiences that qualify them for this role and type of work.

  • Experience in conducting research

  • Familiarity with community resources.

  • Because we serve a linguistically and culturally diverse community the ability to speak more than one language is highly valued.

  • Valid drivers license.


Working Conditions

  • The work environment is diverse necessitating clear communication and an approach of curiosity rather than judgment.

  • The shared work environment may be busy and loud.

  • As a community centre operates as a public space there may be occasions where individuals or families in crisis seek assistance requiring adherence to organizational protocols and safety procedures for interventions.

Other Requirements
Candidates who progress through our selection process will be required to provide the following before an employment agreement is finalized.

  • Must provide two professional references.

  • All employees within Fernwood Neighbourhood House require a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check upon being hired.

Unionized Position
Fernwood Neighbourhood House is a unionized workplace and this position is part of the BC General Employees Union (BCGEU). We are currently negotiating our first collective agreement. The compensation package for this role reflects current wages and benefits with adjustments anticipated once the collective agreement is finalized.
