GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


The Wyoming Department of Corrections is committed to public safety high correctional standards and a safe supportive working environment for our employees.


We are now seeking Correctional Officers for the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins Wyoming. The Wyoming State Penitentiary (WSP) is a high-custody facility for the general population and administrative segregation housing. This position is essential for maintaining the institutions safety and security and is considered a Law Enforcement position receiving the 20-year retirement and state benefits package. This is an entry-level position and career/growth opportunities are available.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.


To maintain institutional safety standards the position requires the following:
  • Enforcement of rules and regulations.
  • Responding to post orders of varied assigned posts.
  • Supervising inmates in the performance of various jobs; modeling appropriate pro-social behavior.
  • Assisting in a variety of searches including checking for contraband items.
  • Observing daily inmate living programming work areas and the perimeter fence line reporting security violations.
  • Conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates.
  • Assuming duties of housing control centers central control centers and inmate living areas monitoring inmate movements.
  • Becoming familiar with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of inmate movements and infractions.
  • Assisting in restraining unruly inmates utilizing the minimum amount of force required.
  • Assisting in transporting inmates within and off the institutions boundaries including inter- and intra-state predetermined destinations.
  • Assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the appropriate out-processing of released inmates.
  • Attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level.

Qualifications

**Must be at least 18 years of age
**Must bea U.S. Citizen
**Must havea valid drivers license
**Must not havea felony or domestic violence conviction.


KNOWLEDGE:




MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience in a Correctional Setting

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt
  • The Wyoming Department of Corrections is a Drug-Free Workplace. Per WDOC policy all staff are subject to drug testing while employed by WDOC. Successful applicants for employment must pass a criminal background/reference check medical evaluation and drug test prior to appointment.
  • WDOC is a Tobacco-Free workplace and prohibits the taking carrying possessing or introducing of smoking materials smokeless tobacco or tobacco substitutes on or into WDOC facilities and grounds.

  • REQUIRED: All successful candidates will be required to complete an initial training period and be awarded Correctional Officer Certification by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission within one year of initial appointment.
