Job Description

The purpose of this position is to oversee daily operations and services related to academic advising at SMSU. The position provides oversight of the Satisfactory Academic Progress policy (SMSU Policy A-005) including at-risk student outreach and interventions to students placed on academic warning suspension or probation to discuss necessary GPA and/or completion rate thresholds and early alerts. The position also provides program guidance support and supervision to three professional staff members/Success Coaches who holistically support underserved and underrepresented students in SMSUs Success @ Southwest Program. The Associate Director is responsible for assigning academic advisors to new undeclared advisees advising students seeking an AA degree as well as coordinating and directing all advising sessions during on-campus registration programs New Mustang Days and Meet Your Advisor programming during Gold Rush Days. This position also co-coordinates the academic appeal process alongside the Academic Deans Office. In addition the Associate Director of Student Success provides comprehensive information and support to all students to assist in their academic personal and career development. This position serves as a credible expert and resource for all SMSU faculty staff and administration and provides ongoing training and professional development sessions to new and returning faculty advisors applicable staff and athletic coaches related to advising and satisfactory academic progress. This position serves as the Chair of the Academic Advising Support Committee and leads efforts to assess and improve academic advising at SMSU.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree plus three years of advanced professional experience in counseling education or higher education or bachelors degree plus four years of advanced professional experience in counseling education or higher education.

  • Demonstrated understanding and familiarity with academic support services at the university level and the ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Strong interpersonal oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team to work collaboratively and to foster strong relationships with administration faculty staff and students.

  • Knowledge of D2L Brightspace (or other course management system) Integrated Student Records System (ISRS) (or other student information system) Slate (or other customer relationship management (CRM) system) e-Services DARs Workday and academic catalogs.

  • Certification as a test proctor site manager and institution administrator for ACCUPLACER.

Preferred Qualification

  • Knowledge of specific areas including admission requirements and procedures SMSU curriculum student development theory advising philosophies and organizing and coordinating programs.
