IT Systems Specialist

An IT Systems Specialist shares responsibility with the other members of the Tech Systems Support Team for the ongoing delivery of district IT services. The work is accomplished in direct consultation with other members of the Tech Systems Support Team as well as the Director of Technology and occasionally other departments. This position is supervised directly by the Director of Technology.
Work involves planning deployment and sustainment of all district IT services and related network/computer hardware. The Tech Systems Support Team shares workload according to areas of expertise and/or interest at the discretion of the Director of Technology. Additionally each IT Systems Specialist is primarily responsible for supporting end-users (students staff) at specific District schools & sites.
An IT Systems Specialist must be able to function effectively with minimal guidance in high pressure situations and be able to judge when to involve the Director of Technology or other members of the Tech Systems Support Team for additional support. The IT Systems Specialist is expected to maintain the highest level of confidentiality in all activities.
- Responsible for the day-to-day monitoring & maintenance of IT services in assigned zones/areas. The IT Systems Specialist is expected to cross-train to ensure service coverage is maintained when colleagues are unavailable or absent.
- Responsible for productivity in assigned specialty areas such as firewall administration IT security monitoring wireless/wired network administration or software/device administration.
- Responsible for individual work schedule and time/resource management.
- Work with other IT System Specialists to plan team-level work to provide support to each other and update colleagues on tasks and projects.
- As required perform research propose projects and make recommendations on the suitability of proposed services hardware or software considering the requirements of district departments and end-users.
- Collectively configure and deploy hardware and software to district sites.
- Receive and address end-user IT service requests; set task priorities according to urgency and user impact consistent with departmental standards and practice. Identify and address root causes to minimize service requests.
- Obtain and analyze data to engage in data-driven decision making and when proposing projects or determining specifications.
- Perform diagnostic and repair services on network and computer hardware as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge Abilities and Skills
- Strong adaptable analytical skills required to troubleshoot and address computer network and software-related problems.
- Basic knowledge of network administration including DNS DHCP and IP routing.
- Basic knowledge of IT security in areas of device encryption and mobile device management.
- Expert knowledge of Microsoft Windows operating systems and management tools.
- Strong independently motivated learning ability to ensure skills and knowledge remain relevant for current and future needs in a quickly evolving environment.
- Strong team player with good communication and planning skills.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills as well as an ability to choose a course of action with incomplete or inaccurate information.
- Future thinker who likes the challenge of new and changing technologies and is able to balance short term tactical work with progress toward a long-term strategic vision.

Required Training Certification and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Microsoft certifications (equivalent to a two-year post-secondary technical diploma) or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of two years administrative training and experience with Microsoft serveror 2022.
- Experience with administration of M365 environment.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar position or demonstrated equivalency.
- Training or experience as well as demonstrated competency in the fundamentals of network administration support and troubleshooting.
- Training or experience in current district standard applications (hardware and software).
- Able to use critical thinking techniques to troubleshoot IT user requests and overall project orientated accountabilities.
- Strong ability to communicate well with team members and escalates issues appropriately when necessary.
- Valid BC Class 5 drivers license.
Rate of pay: As per Collective Agreement 440
