Job Description

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is one of the largest school divisions in Alberta serving the educational needs of approximately 17950 students in 42 schools. EIPS is recruiting a temporary full-time Speech Language Pathologist Assistant with our Support for Students department.

  • Commencing August 27 2025
  • Ending June 24 2026
  • 35 hours per week (7 hours per day)

Elk Island Public Schools Central Services building is located in Sherwood Park at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the Division Central Services is comprised of eight departments in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive Communication Services Facility Services Student Transportation Human Resources Financial Services Supports for Students and Information Technologies. Central Services is staffed by 190 employees.

Speech-Language Pathologist Assistants provide support and assistance to speech-language pathologists working in schools. Speech-Language Pathologist Assistants carry out specific communication interventions and treatment programs that are planned directed and supervised by speech-language pathologists to improve students communication skills. Duties include direct treatment and indirect services as delegated.


Instructional Support

  • Conduct articulation and language therapy activities that are based on goals and treatment plans developed by speech-language pathologists for individual students or small groups
  • Assist in supporting students who are using augmentative and alternative communication devices
  • Model communication strategies in the classroom environment
  • Administer screening tools and/or assist with client assessment
  • Partake in planning and evaluation of communication services
  • Work directly with students as assigned by a speech-language pathologist
  • Monitor students progress during therapy sessions and in the classroom environment
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding students


Assist with Materials Preparation

  • Create therapy materials using programs such Lesson Pix
  • Create materials for students using augmentative and alternative communication devices
  • Modify and prepare materials for students
  • Assist in the development of home programs
  • Ensure equipment and facilities are kept in a clean safe and orderly manner
  • Maintain inventory of assessment/treatment materials
  • Photocopy correlate file word process laminate


Communication and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate documentation of the treatment process
  • Communicate observations of students progress collected in logs charts and data sheets as requested by the SLP
  • Directs questions regarding the diagnosis and treatment of clients to the SLP
  • Collect statistical data as requested by the SLP
  • Participate in student team conferences when requested by the SLP
  • Regularly meet with their supervising speech-language pathologist
  • Attend staff meetings on a monthly basis


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant Diploma
  • Experience with students who have complex communication needs


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ATTITUDES

  • Good observation skills and problem-solving skills
  • Good skill working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Flexibility patience sensitivity tolerance enthusiasm creativity and imagination
  • Ability to take direction and follow treatment programs as set out by speech-language pathologists
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of computer apps including Touch Chat LAMP and Proloquo2go
  • Knowledge of computers (Word Processing LessonPix)
  • Previous experience working with children who have complex learning needs
