Your Opportunity
One Permanent Full Time Position.
Are you interested in playing a key role in building and maintaining relationships with Indigenous communities Capital Power is seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to play a key role in building and creating relationships with Indigenous communities - starting in the Treaty 6 and Treaty 7 regions of Alberta and communities in Ontario with a vision to expand across Turtle Island (North America).
You will be presented the opportunity to help Capital Power build maintain and cultivate authentic relationships with the community including with elders influential leadership and community members and youth.
You will contribute to our team by:
- Supporting and guiding the implementation our Indigenous ReconciliAction plan and Chairing our ReconciliAction Committee
- Developing relationships with leaders within Capital Power (i.e. Commercial Management & Carbon Technology Supply Chain Origination People Services) to draft innovative engagement strategies to develop and grow Indigenous community relationships that are authentic trust based mutually beneficial and focused on each communities interests and priorities.
- Collaborating with local Indigenous communities near our Genesee Generating Station and Halkirk 2 Wind facilities to develop an engagement strategy with their consultation and. economic development offices and their leadership to support partnerships.
- Leading the Indigenous engagement for all Nations and other key influencers for Capital Power projects with an initial focus on Alberta projects. Implementing regulatory requirements in consultation / engagement and effectively detailing the outcomes.
- Providing awareness and guidance on Indigenous cultural protocols norms and politics to ensure the company respectfully engages with Indigenous communities incorporates an Indigenous lens builds positive relationships and meets regulatory engagement requirements
- Leading and assisting with the development and implementation of regional engagement plans strategies talking points for media spokesperson and related budgets that reflect the interests of the Company and the potentially affected Indigenous groups.
- Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with internal senior leadership and external stakeholders to ensure effective communication fostering collaboration and aligning strategic goals
- Building trust and credibility while championing organizational priorities and representing our interests with key partners and stakeholders.
What you will bring to the role:
Education:
- University degree in Indigenous Studies Arts Humanities Community Development Public Relations Journalism or equivalent post-secondary program.
- Education equivalency may be considered.
Experience:
- Lived experience within Indigenous communities or extensive experience working with Indigenous groups and knowledge of Indigenous cultures.
- 7 or more years of directly related experience in Indigenous engagement preferably in the energy industry or power generation sector.
- 5 or more years leading projects initiatives and teams with open mindedness non-judgement caring and kindness and implementing strategies and initiatives that are strategic and mutually beneficial for Indigenous communities and the company
- Previous experience working within Indigenous research policy or programming is an asset.
- Knowledge and/or implementation of PAR certification an asset.
- Knowledge and direct experience in engaging with Indigenous communities including Indigenous history and rights cultural protocols and norms Indigenous politics and the ability to successfully engage with Indigenous peoples.
- Experience in and understanding of a large public company with operations in multiple regions.
- Experience navigating and understanding the intricacies of organizational structures culture and politics to effectively influence and drive results. This includes recognizing key decision-makers understanding formal and informal networks and leveraging these insights to advance initiatives and foster collaboration.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in Indigenous issues in Canada including Indigenous governance community development the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.
- Experience working in research program development or project management preferably with Indigenous community initiatives is an asset.
Technical Skills:
- Strong interpersonal skills including consultation negotiation facilitation risk communication and conflict resolution.
- Understanding organizational change management and planning for successful transition from current to target methodology practices.
- Ability to inspire and motivate others towards a shared vision articulating a clear and compelling purpose that aligns with organizational goals. This includes setting a strategic direction communicating effectively and rallying support to turn vision into reality.
- Ability to foresee and understand long-term trends opportunities and challenges and to integrate this knowledge into effective strategies.
- Superior communication and collaborative skills to facilitate relationship building within and across teams. Social media savvy with an understanding of online communications tools and tactics is an asset.
- Knowledge of cultural protocols with Indigenous communities.
- The ability to communicate in an or multiple Indigenous language(s) is an asset
Working Conditions:
- Hybrid Office/Work from home position.
- Travel to meet and engage with Indigenous communities on a regular basis and engage with operational and development communities across Turtle Island as required.
