As a Carrier Capacity Specialist in the produce freight sector you will be responsible for building and maintaining a reliable network of carriers to support the timely and safe transportation of fresh produce across multiple long-haul lanes primarily USA interstate. This role requires a deep understanding of market conditions strong negotiation skills and the ability to quickly secure capacity in a fast-paced environment. You will work closely with logistics coordinators account managers carriers and capacity manager to ensure seamless execution of job responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Source and secure carrier capacity for temperature-controlled (reefer) and time-sensitive produce shipments.
- Negotiate competitive rates with carriers based on market conditions while ensuring service quality and reliability.
- Build and maintain strong carrier relationships with a focus on prime carriers experienced in produce freight.
- Monitor real-time availability and trends to maximize carrier utilization and lane coverage.
- Collaborate with the operations and dispatch teams to ensure proper documentation tracking and compliance.
- Onboard and vet new carriers ensuring all insurance certifications and service levels are up to company standards.
- Proactively resolve issues or service failures such as delays equipment breakdowns or compliance gaps.
- Maintain an accurate and up-to-date carrier database and performance tracking system.
- Provide market insights and capacity forecasting to support sales and procurement teams
- Support afterhours coverage as needed for urgent updates and load issues outside regular business hours.
Qualifications :
Desired Skills and Experience:
- 13 years of experience in logistics transportation or freight brokeragepreferably in the produce or perishable goods industry.
- Strong understanding of reefer freight temperature requirements and transit time sensitivity.
- Proven ability to negotiate rates and secure last-minute capacity under pressure.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills both internally and externally.
- Familiarity with TMS platforms carrier onboarding tools and load boards (e.g. DAT Truckstop).
- Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret market data and capacity trends.
- Highly organized detail-oriented and able to manage multiple shipments simultaneously.
- Bilingual (Spanish/Punjabi) is a plus particularly when working with regional carriers.
- Knowledge of USDA FMCSA and other relevant produce shipping regulations is preferred.
