Job Description
The Department of Physics at the University of Nevada Reno is seeking a Development Technician 3 to support the design development and maintenance of laboratory and teaching equipment. This position reports to the Laboratory Coordinator and operates under general direction.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and develop mechanical components and systems using CAD/CAM software (Fusion 360).
Fabricate components using a variety of mechanical tools and equipment.
Maintain and support the departments technical infrastructure assisting faculty researchers and graduate students with equipment installation and setup.
Collaborate with internal and external partners including manufacturing vendors to support scientific research operations.
Additional Duties:
Assist the Laboratory Coordinator in managing the Physics Machine Shop ensuring tools and equipment are safe functional and well-maintained.
Process work orders and coordinate procurement of parts and materials to support ongoing projects and operations.
Maintain departmental office and instructional equipment as needed.
Instructional Support:
Support instruction for the Intermediate Physics Laboratory course (PHYS 323) with a focus on CAD/CAM applications and machine tool operations.
Contribute to the development of course materials and assist in the design and fabrication of educational aids.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in electrical or mechanical engineering or related field and two years of experience in the fabrication maintenance calibration repair and modification of a variety of electrical mechanical and/or computerized equipment and computer systems; OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Pursuant to NRS 284.4066 this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
Preferred Qualifications
Specialized knowledge in vacuum systems precision welding electrical and electronic troubleshooting woodworking and high-pressure gases will be valuable to this position.
Logistics and bookkeeping skills will be a plus.
The incumbent should be able to lift more than 60 pounds and follow the correct procedures on handling hazardous materials and safety guidelines established by the university system.
Schedule
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.
Compensation Grade
Grade 35 (Entry Step 01 $30.85/hr. Step 03 $33.66/hr.)
In classified service salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment the candidates qualifications internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
