SUMMARY
Under the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) cooperative agreement Heluna Health and the Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are recruiting for an Intern to be part of the Legionnaires Disease team.
The Intern will work with staff in the California Department of Public Health Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB) to improve the quality and completeness of outbreak investigation data. The Interns primary responsibility would be to support the Senior Legionella Epidemiologist and other CDPH staff in collecting cleaning and analyzing legionellosis outbreak data. Additional responsibilities will include preparing narrative and visual summaries of analysis results and building electronic questionnaires for outbreak investigation interviews.
This positions major responsibilities will be writing code to clean analyze and summarize data; backfilling historic data into disease and outbreak surveillance databases; building electronic forms/surveys for outbreak investigation interviews; writing reports and creating visualizations to summarize analysis results; and communicating data and analysis results to internal partners.
The salary for this position is $23.00 per hour.
This part-time temporary position is grant funded through 07/31/2025.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manage clean and analyze data of existing surveillance and outbreak datasets
- Assist with the establishment of new protocols and data collection tools
- Assist with the generation of data visualizations and written and oral reports
- Establish and maintain reliable efficient and effective methods for communicating with team members partners and patients via telephone and email
- Participate in conference calls with partners at CDPH CDC California LHDs laboratories and other state and local health departments
- Perform other duties as directed by the DIS Chief
- Collaborate effectively in a team environment
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist with other infectious disease-related projects as time and interest allows.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of legionellosis case investigations surveillance data and outbreak reporting requirements
- Demonstrated ability to perform data entry cleaning quality assessment and analysis with attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing regarding public health or related issues
- Knowledge and application of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements and protection of health information
- Prior experience conducting telephone-based patient interviews preferred
- Completes assignments in a timely and efficient manner
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work independently
- Demonstrate reliability and integrity
- Fluency in spoken English; fluency in Spanish or other languages preferred
Education/Experience
- Bachelors degree in public health or related field required
- Experience with epidemiology and data analysis required
- Proficiency with coding in R/RStudio required
- Proficiency developing interview/survey questionnaires in REDCap required
- Experience working with protected health information and maintaining patient confidentiality required
- Familiarity with CDCs National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS) required
- Prior knowledge and experience in use of CalREDIE required
- Experience presenting on public health or related issues orally and in writing required
- Experience with Microsoft products including Word Excel Outlook PowerPoint and Access; strong knowledge of Word and Excel required
- Experience with clinical terminology and interpreting laboratory testing results preferred
