Job Description

The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at the University of Nevada Reno is seeking applications for a Development Technician 2. ***This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding.**This position supports field operations for the MAGNET GPS Network which spans western Nevada eastern California and surrounding areas. Key responsibilities include conducting GPS field surveyssuch as deploying relocating and retrieving instrumentsdownloading data maintaining accurate records and assisting in training students to set up and deploy GPS equipment.

Field and Technical Duties:

  • Travel to remote locations in the western Great Basin to perform independent fieldwork.

  • Maintain GPS instrumentation and equipment: purchase necessary supplies research materials based on technical needs and cost-effectiveness and manage required administrative documentation.

  • Ensure all project equipment (e.g. drills receivers solar power systems) is functional and maintained.

  • Keep Nevada Geodetic Laboratory facilities organized clean and secure.

Research Support:

  • Assist NBMG faculty with externally funded research projects by coordinating and scheduling activities with principal investigators.

  • Support may include transporting and organizing physical samples at NBMG offices field sites or the Great Basin Science Sample and Records Library.

  • Operate warehouse equipment such as pallet jacks and order pickers as needed.

Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Manage the departments vehicle pool in coordination with NBMG administrative staff ensuring regular maintenance and operational readiness.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in electrical or mechanical engineering or related field and one (1) year of experience in the fabrication maintenance calibration repair and modification of a variety of electrical mechanical and/or computerized equipment and computer systems; OR

  • Associates degree from an accredited college or university in electronics or related field and two (2) years of experience in the fabrication maintenance calibration repair and modification of a variety of electrical mechanical and/or computerized equipment and computer systems; OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066 this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

This position requires driving; a drivers license is a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Applicants who have experience and comfort independently navigating and operating a four-wheel drive vehicle in remote locations are preferred.

  • Lifting and carrying boxes up to 50 pounds is required at times.

Schedule

  • The typical work schedule is 40 hours however hours may be variable during weekdays when travel for field operations is required possibly occasionally with some late evenings.

  • Some days may be 10-hour shifts but work hours do not exceed 40 hours per week.

  • During the times when field work travel occurs the schedule is flexible; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

  • Travel for field operations is generally less than 4 days per month but can be more in summer less in winter.

Compensation Grade

Grade 33 (Entry Step 01 $28.38/hr. Step 03 $ 30.85/hr.)

In classified service salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment the candidates qualifications internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
