Under the general supervision of Laboratory Technical Specialist and/or Laboratory Director performs a wide variety of complex clinical laboratory tests and procedures according to established standards; maintains equipment and monitors quality control and instrument/test performance. Confirms and verifies results through an in-depth knowledge of techniques principles instrumentation and quality control review.

Job Description & Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

• HT or HTL Certification in Histology by accrediting agency.
• Five years histology experience in a hospital setting. Associates or Bachelors degree with courses in the biological sciences and formal training.
• Knowledge of theory and practice in all phases of histology
• Prepares histologic slides from surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologist
• Assists the pathologists as needed in the gross room for frozen sections including cutting and staining of tissue specimens
• Demonstrates appropriate use of the LIS system to complete assigned tasks which include the accessioning and proper specimen labeling insuring specimen integrity.
• Performs automated IHC and manual special stains in accordance to quality standards
• Have the ability to evaluate validate and optimize new histochemical and immunohistochemical reagents and antibodies
• Operates and performs all quality control instrument maintenance and documentation required by accrediting agencies
• Assists in maintaining sections inventory to ensure proper levels of reagents controls and disposables
• Communicates effectively and appropriately with coworkers departments provider office staff and pathologists to assure the quality & integrity of service
• Provides quality customer service in a timely and courteous manner
• Possess the willingness and ability to be flexible and adjustable to change
• Maintains a safe work environment in the laboratory by meeting all regulatory standards
• Keeps an organized and orderly work area
• Performs additional tasks assignments or projects as needed to benefit the laboratory and organization

Assures quality control

• Prepares standard solutions and reagents and maintains Laboratory equipment in good working order.
• Complies with all safety and related rules/regulations and adheres to all proficiency testing requirements per CMS.
• Completes all appropriate CEUs.

Performs related duties

• Performs additional related duties as assigned.
• Troubleshoots technical problems involving chemicals and equipment.

Educational / Minimum requirements:

AAS in Histotechnology or applied science and HT (ASCP) certification is required or BS in applied science and HT HTL (ASCP) certification required experience in a hospital laboratory required.

State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:

ASCP Certification required.

Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:

General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.

Physical Requirements:

Walking standing sitting bending required. Must work under the stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands requiring accuracy. Position requires ability to constantly lift light objects less than 20 lbs. perform moderately difficult manipulative skills arm-hand steadiness and hand-eye coordination skills; walk stand and sit for prolonged periods; see objects closely and hear normal sounds with some background noises.

Work Environment:

Employee may frequently be exposed to blood body tissues and/or fluids chemical fumes and hazardous waste materials. Proper PPE is supplied by the employer.

Cognitive Requirements:

Position requires ability to concentrate on moderate detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time. Individual must be able to understand and relate to the concept behind specific ideas and remember multiple tasks given to self and others over long periods of time able to communicate verbally using advanced level vocabulary.
