Internal Posting Only temporary or permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) employees in a temporary full-time temporary part-time permanent full-time permanent part-time probationary trainee or time-limited position or a layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act)may apply.


This work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owned bridges culverts and pipes within Division 12. This position will report to the Statesville Bridge Maintenance Office. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. The recommended applicant will work in and around heavy traffic near heavy equipment and with power tools. The recommended applicant must be able to work in a close team environment or independently as needed. The recommended applicant could possibly be exposed to briars poisonous plants spiders and snakes when working around or under bridges. When traffic volume dictates the recommended applicant may be required to work at night or on weekends. When inclement weather occurs the recommended applicant may be called upon to work nights and/or weekends to help in the snow and ice removal process.

Additional Expectations:

May serve as a Crew Leader in the absence of other Supervisors or Crew Leader. Work requires Journey level skills in a variety of functional areas including equipment operation pile driving carpentry concrete work machine operation contract inspect repair of culverts bridges large pipe bulkheads and pile clusters sandblasting/painting demolition work welding structure inspect trenching/shoring lead paint removal steel fabrication and steel beam repair installation and maintenance of erosion control. Must be willing to attend training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state/federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (ie. Traffic control and environmental stewardship). Safely be able to lift/carry 50 lbs. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug screening is required for this position. Release form (ALCDRG-01) and background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for past 3 years about controlled substance/alcohol test. Safety toe footwear meeting ASTM F2413-05 required for employment

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five (5) years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements: Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
