Job Description
Position Title: Mountain Patrol Director
Reports To: Director of Mountain Operations
Status:Year-Round; Full-time
Job Summary:
Provide and manage professional EMS and rescue operations for Brundage Mountain Resort. Oversee and maintain the mountain safety program monitor trails and participate in guest education. Monitor year-round guest recreational activities to promote mountain safety. This is a managerial leadership position but not part of the senior leadership team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Mange the patrol staff life-cycle encompassing hiring performance management scheduling training and development for both paid and volunteer staff.
- Oversee and guide all patrol operations ensuring efficient dispatch for both emergency and non-emergency tasks while adhering to industry best safety practices.
- Lead and supervise mountain emergency response operations which include but are not limited to; guest and staff injuries search and rescue chairlift evacuations in-area avalanches and mass casualty incidents.
- Responsible for facilitating safe slope conditions which includes avalanche mitigation procedures and the installation of removable trail signage and safety markings for both natural and man-made trail hazards.
- Manage and handle explosives for avalanche mitigation maintaining safe and effective procedures in adherence to ATF regulations with the objective of protecting resort guests and enhancing slope safety.
- Administer and facilitate EMT BLS ambulance transport services for Brundage mountain ensuring personnel are adequately trained and the program is properly licensed and compliant with all state and local medical regulations.
- Annually collaborate with the director of mountain operations and the base operations director to review and update the companys Emergency Response Plan and Incident Command System collaborating with all departmental managers to develop mico-departmental ERPs. Familiarize all staff with the Incident Command System as it relates to the emergency response plan.
- Support the event department with set up and tear down of on-slope activities which include races freestyle events terrain park events promotional activities and private events.
- Prepare and manage the patrol departments budget on an annual basis ensuring the department operates within budget. Budget for essential equipment and supplies such as medical supplies safety gear avalanche mitigation equipment radios staff training and staff certifications.
- Conduct on mountain accident investigations. Manage patient reporting and the PCR system.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of patrol experience with a minimum of 2 years in a Leadership and Supervisory position
- Current EMT license required. Must obtain ID EMT license in Idaho.
- Expert first aid and alpine rescue skills
- Experience in snow safety with minimum Avalanche Pro I certification
- Trained for and able to train others in specialized rescues such as ascenders lift evacuations self-evacuation difficult extrications and transports
- Expert skiing ability able to ski or snowboard all terrain in all conditions
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Positive and supportive leadership skills
- Proficient computer use including Office 365 Prospero ADP and others
- Experience with resort summer operations and Bike Patrol a plus
- Familiar with medical legal and risk management issues within the resort industry
Other Requirements:
- Must have current drivers license and be able to meet insurance requirements
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check
- Must be flexible and be able to help meet the needs of other departments and resort partners
- Must be willing/able to teach and willing/able to learn
- Must be able to work in a fast paced/variable environment
- Must be able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where often limited standardization exists
- Must be able to work outside in adverse weather conditions year-round
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends /holidays
Physical Requirements:
Frequent sitting walking standing driving and talking on the phone in both noisy and quiet surroundings. Important to be able to hear and speak in noisy and quiet surroundings continuously. Continuous bending/stooping and twisting/turning from the waist. Frequent pushing/pulling objects both with and without wheels climbing kneeling and squatting. Will also be working with hands and fingers and lifting and moving objects up to 100 lbs horizontally and vertically. Near and far vision as well as good depth perception and color vision are critical. Continuous endurance needed. Occasional use of senses. Occasional operation of ATVs snowmobiles snow cats and heavy equipment.
