PURPOSE STATEMENT
This position primarily provides care to a medically involved student in a one to one capacity. Primary responsibilities include updating the individual health care plan communicating with healthcare providers and offices when needed administering medications monitoring student health needs and assisting the student in the classroom to progress toward health goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assess the physical mental and environmental health needs of the student as they relate to the educational environment in accordance with state and local mandates.
- Create implement and monitor appropriate health plans to meet the medical health and safety needs of student.
- Provide health care to the student including initial assessment management of illness and/or referral to other health professionals monitoring of chronic diseases disease prevention and the coordination of services when specialized care is required.
- Coordinates with guardians and providers to update the individual health care plans and goals of the student.
- Maintains good communication with guardians Health Director teachers and other staff members to ensure the student is meeting their health goals.
- Maintains accurate and timely charting.
- Regulate and dispense prescribed medication and/or treatments as required.
- Maintains a clean sanitary and safe environment for students by using universal precautions and following bloodborne pathogen guidelines.
- Cultivate and model appropriate and cooperative behavior including protecting confidential information consistent with district ethical guidelines.
- Follows district policies and procedures.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
May be asked to support the classroom building or health services department within the scope and intent of the position assuming primary responsibilities are stable or in the case of student absence. Including but not limited to:
- Perform vision and hearing screening as required and in accordance with the Washington State Codes.
- Provide Health Clinic coverage in the absence of Health Room Assistants.
- Collaborate with and Support District School Nurses.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports jointly to the Building Principal and the Director of Health Services.
MENTAL DEMANDS
- Required to deal with a wide range of student staff and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service oriented manner.
- May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- May be required to transfer students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Current CPR/First Aid and AED certification or willing to obtain
- Valid Registered Nurse License for the State of Washington
- Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) credential for school nursing or willing to obtain.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
- Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff students and patrons of the district.
- Excellent human relations communication and organizational skills; ability to communicate effectively with students staff and parents.
- Computerized record keeping skills.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize student needs.
- Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with assigned classroom staff.
- Ability to maintain state/federal special education compliance requirements including timelines involving special needs or medically fragile students.
- Ability to develop organize and maintain comprehensive student health care plans.
- Knowledge of community resources and family service agencies.
- Required to maintain confidentiality.
Licenses/Special Requirements
- Must maintain all licenses and certifications as a condition of continued employment.
- Valid State drivers License and access to personal transportation.
- Completed employment application/background check.
- Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.
