Job Summary
The primary responsibilities of this position are planning implementing and evaluating developmentally appropriate play opportunities for patients. This role supports the Child Life Specialist in promoting normal growth and development for pediatric patients and families served in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. The Child Life Assistant will also be involved on a regular basis with implementation of community and hospital based programs with reflect the mission of the Child Life Program and DeVos Childrens Hospital.
Essential Functions
- Provides safe age and developmentally supportive play activities for patients and families.
- Communicates with nursing Child Life Specialists and other clinical staff to assist in meeting the developmental needs of patients.
- Maintain clean and safe play environments and organized storage areas in accordance with hospital safety and policies and procedures.
- Supervises and facilitates volunteer resources to help in meeting the needs of the patients and families.
- Monitors and reports to Child Life Specialist any social/emotional needs of the child and family as well as other defined areas which a patient could benefit from involvement with a Child Life Specialist. (ex. MRI scheduled IV start etc.)
- Participates in coordination and implementation of community and special/holiday events which the Child Life Program is involved in supporting.
- Anticipates customer needs and provides services to all customers including patients physicians hospital departments and staff. Coordinates requests for services information records and data on a timely basis. Researches and resolves problems.
- Attends mandatory meetings in-services and trainings as required for this position.
Qualifications
- Required High School Diploma or equivalent
- Preferred Associates Degree in child life child development child psychology early childhood education recreational therapy or related degree
- 1 year of relevant experience Previous work with children and / or teenagers Preferred
- 1 year of relevant experience Working with volunteers Preferred
- 1 year of relevant experience Program planning and development Preferred
- CRT-CPR - AHA American Heart Association 90 Days required
