JOB SUMMARY

The Journey Carpenter plays a key role in fulfilling the districts construction and maintenance projects safely within budget and within established time frames. This role involves performing construction and carpentry activities within the schools to meet operational needs executing necessary carpentry repairs or replacements to ensure optimal functionality. The Journey Carpenter will also provide guidance and training on the proper usage and maintenance of carpentry features to both staff and end-users. This position requires that all work be completed in compliance with safety standards environmental regulations and manufacturer specifications. In addition the Trades Lead Journey Carpenter will support the Area Supervisor by assigning work orders reviewing and approving invoices and performing other administrative and organizational tasks.

To be successful in this role the Journey Carpenter must have strong problem-solving skills attention to detail the ability to work independently and as part of a team and demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  1. Must be a current internal SLCSD employee and hold a current trades title
  2. High school diploma or equivalent
  3. Completion of a technical training education/apprenticeship program in carpentry or a related field or five (5) years of full-time job-related experience
  4. Experience and ability to use carpentry equipment hand tools and power tools
  5. Experience interpreting schematic diagrams blueprints sketches building plans and other specifications
  6. Speak read write present professionally analyze understand and interpret written and verbal communications in English
  7. Basic experience and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel etc.) and experience using data-based software
  8. Utah drivers license and evidence of insurability

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

These are examples of skills and experience that the best-qualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.

  1. Six (6) or more years of job-related experience
  2. Previous experience working for a school district or other public entity
  3. Utah Construction Trades Licensure
  4. Spanish or other language proficiency including the ability to read write speak and understand

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Fabricate items (counters temporary partitions etc.) to modify and adapt facilities to specific needs; measure cut and shape wood plastic and other materials using hand tools machines and power saws
  2. Install system component parts playground classroom office equipment doors trim and other facility components to maintain facilities in safe comfortable and effective operating conditions
  3. Remodel office and workspace features (site surfaces cabinets storage systems etc.) including building and repairing cabinetry frameworks floors and other fixtures to ensure safe and efficient utilization of space
  4. Repair various items systems and components (furniture cabinets floor tile laminates ceiling tile etc.) to ensure that spaces are available for use and in safe working condition
  5. Set up scaffolding and use ladders safely to perform tasks above ground level
  6. Move furniture and other materials at jobsites to protect from damage during project work; clean worksite debris and return worksites to operational order
  7. Maintain tools and equipment to ensure that equipment is available and in safe operating condition
  8. Prepare and complete documentation such as work orders reports inventory orders etc. to convey information and provide written support of work activities
  9. Request equipment and supplies to maintain needed inventory and ensure the availability of required items
  10. Coordinate and communicate effectively with building administrators custodians and other trades to complete projects and work orders in an efficient and timely manner
  11. Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns
  12. Transport a variety of items (tools equipment supplies etc.) to ensure the availability of needed materials and equipment at job sites
  13. Perform routine maintenance and safety checks to ensure that items are available and in safe working condition
  14. Complete work in accordance with federal state and local codes manufacturers recommendations and generally accepted carpentry principles
  15. Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees colleagues and stakeholders
  16. Participate in meetings workshops and seminars as assigned to convey or gather information required to perform job functions
  17. Work under limited supervision utilizing time-management and prioritization strategies accurately processing detailed information and meeting deadlines
  18. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform job duties
  19. Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions as required
  20. As needed roll push pull bend reach stoop and lift up to 50 pounds
  21. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  22. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES TRADES LEAD

  1. Review and equitably assign work orders to the appropriate trades staff in a timely manner
  2. Appropriately prioritize work orders to ensure continuity of district operations
  3. Ensure that all work orders are completed and contain appropriate documentation including an accurate accounting of materials used
  4. Review and approve all invoices associated with work orders and capital projects to ensure proper accountability and completion; ensure final invoices are accurate and properly reflect time rates to be paid and materials used
  5. When applicable coordinate with other trades to ensure smooth and efficient completion of work orders and projects
  6. Serve as a point of contact to communicate with building administrators custodians and others regarding the status of work orders and projects within their respective buildings
  7. Coordinate equipment rentals when specialized equipment is required for projects or operations
  8. Serve as a liaison for contractors explaining the scope and timeline for projects overseeing the contractors involvement in projects and ensuring satisfactory completion of projects
  9. Oversee and facilitate equipment maintenance and supply inventories to ensure continuity of operations
  10. For capital projects coordinate with the purchasing department to design the scope of work write bid specifications and support the bidding and award process. Upon award oversee and coordinate the project walk-through scheduling change orders satisfactory completion and closure.
  11. Assist the Area Supervisor during emergencies as needed; serve in the capacity of the Area Supervisor when the Area Supervisor is unavailable

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting carrying pushing pulling climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching crawling and fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting 5% crawling through tunnels 40% walking and 50% standing. The job is performed under temperature variations and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury or illness and may respond to district emergencies during irregular hours.
