Job Description

Position Summary:
The University of Akron invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Advancement the institutions chief advancement officer and a key member of the Presidents Leadership Team. This executive leader will shape and execute a bold institution-wide strategy for fundraising alumni engagement and community relations to advance the universitys mission and long-term goals.

Reporting directly to the President the Vice President for Advancement will lead all aspects of philanthropic development including major and annual giving corporate and foundation partnerships alumni relations and stewardship programs. The successful candidate will be a collaborative strategist and experienced fundraiser with a deep commitment to higher education and student success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for all aspects of fundraising including annual major planned and alumni giving as well as corporate and foundation philanthropy. Design and implement innovative programs to drive high participation levels emphasizing unrestricted endowment and capital support.
  • Establish and coordinate fundraising priorities in collaboration with colleges centers and other university units. Work alongside the President Provost Deans faculty and alumni to cultivate and manage essential funding sources.
  • Guide the leadership of the Alumni Association. Create strategies to communicate with and engage university alumni. Oversee growth campaigns for alumni membership and contributions. Enhance the relationships between development and alumni staff fostering collaboration.
  • Maintain a personal portfolio of major and leadership gift prospects. Represent the university at campus community and off-site events to build and strengthen relationships with donors alumni and partners.
  • Lead strategic engagement with corporations foundations civic organizations and community groups. Collaborate with academic and administrative leaders to enhance philanthropic partnerships and support interdisciplinary and cross-institutional initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local regional and national stakeholders to cultivate goodwill enhance institutional connections and discover opportunities for collaborative engagement.
  • Oversee and promote initiatives that foster mutually beneficial partnerships with community-based organizations local government and business leaders reinforcing the universitys role as an anchor institution.
  • Collaborate closely with the President to develop and support her/his leadership gifts portfolio.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising stewardship and engagement events that link key constituents to the universitys mission and strategic plan.
  • In consultation with the President define institutional performance goals and track progress. Provide regular presentations and reports to monitor and communicate development performance. Serve as the advancement liaison to the Board of Trustees Finance and Administration Committee and deliver updates to relevant university committees.
  • Represent the Division on university committees councils and initiatives. Serve on the Presidents Leadership Team and other institutional groups as needed.
  • Provide vision mentorship and leadership to teams across advancement fostering innovation collaboration and high standards of excellence. Establish a performance management culture where every team member has clear measurable quantitative and qualitative goals aligned with institutional priorities.

Additional Position Information:

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree required
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in advancement development or related fields
  • At least 6 years in a senior leadership role with demonstrated success in building and leading high-performing teams
  • Proven track record in securing major and principal gifts donor stewardship and campaign execution
  • Strong ability to build strategic relationships with high-net-worth individuals corporations and philanthropic partners
  • Excellent communication strategic planning and interpersonal skills
  • Experience using advancement technologies and data analytics to inform strategy and measure outcomes
