    Job Summary:
    Special Education Teachers have an oversight role for all students within the Academy setting to ensure a safe academic environment conducive to learning. Special Education Teachers ensure proper planning and follow up for the academic progress of all students and work cooperatively with the various Academy teams. Special Education Teachers ensure accurate and timely reporting to the Director of Special Education as required by governmental bodies regarding students performance and challenges with recommendations for action and a summary of actions taken. Primary assignment may be a specific classroom (including homeroom duties) or teaching a particular subject matter in regular class including interventions and tutoring times.

    Description of Duties:

    Student Academic Achievement
    • Prepare students to meet academic testing requirements (internal state-mandated and federal-mandated) and to achieve academic growth by implementing Academy curriculum and philosophy to the classes he or she is assigned to teach
    • Facilitate and communicate knowledge and strategies for learning to students
    • Administer/proctor tests approved by the Academy and correct all daily work and exams
    • Monitor academic progress of students
    • Work directly with students to implement the curriculum and respond to special needs
    • Modify lesson plans and examinations according to the IEP
    • May also be assigned additional non-instructional duties such as arrival or dismissal as determined

    IEP Development and Compliance
    • Write and implement IEPs based on student needs
    • Communicate with teachers regarding accommodations and modifications necessary for student success
    • Accurately document goal progress
    • Attend IEP meetings with the Director of Special Education and report on students present levels needs and progress
    • Accurately document all student services in a timely manner as required for Medicaid reimbursements and monitoring

    Classroom Management
    • Apply Academy and classroom rules consistently and effectively
    • Utilize positive behavior supports and preventive discipline
    • Motivate and engage students
    • Communicate expectations to students clearly
    • Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment conducive to a positive overall learning environment
    • Supervise students within the Academy setting and on Academy grounds

    Professional Relations
    • Motivate students to perform well and respond promptly to student needs
    • Maintain positive relations with students colleagues administration and staff
    • Inspire respect and trust
    • Encourage students to participate in Academy events and activities while adhering to the schools policies and procedures to maintain a positive school climate
    • Support and work cooperatively with school staff
    • Maintain a positive attitude follow instructions and respond to management direction

    • Meet attendance and punctuality guidelines
    • Demonstrate a professional image
    • Demonstrate commitment to quality

    Accountability
    • Communicate to the Director of Special Education regarding any and all areas of academic concern
    • Prepare and maintain accurate and appropriate student attendance and grade records as outlined by the Academys policies
    • Maintain an orderly secure attractive and nurturing classroom environment conducive to learning and supporting a positive school climate
    • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education

    Qualifications:
    • Bachelors degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association
    • Except as otherwise provided by law the Academy shall use certificated teachers according to state board rule
    • Teaching experience preferred
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation
    • Satisfactory performance ratings in delivery of instruction and classroom management
    • Satisfactory completion of oral and written interview
    • Criminal records clearance

    Physical Demands & Work Environment
    In order to successfully perform the essential duties of this job the employee would ideally be able to meet the following physical demands:
    • Occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
    • Stand and walk frequently.
    • Withstand all demands presented by outside weather conditions at any time of the year.
    • Withstand a moderate noise level.
