Job Description

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation based in Menlo Park California is seeking a Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) Manager for the Finance Department.

About the Finance Department

The Finance Department serves the foundations charitable work by providing financial and business planning support to enable the organization to focus on its philanthropic goals. This financial leadership is offered through sound financial planning and reporting quality operational processes and business controls that meet the needs of the foundation and outside constituents such as regulators.


About the Position

The Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) Manager is an agile and reliable financial partner who empowers the Hewlett Foundations mission through expertise collaboration commitment and foresight. This role reports to the CFO and leads the foundations financial planning budgeting and strategic analysis functions with a focus on providing deeper broader analysis that enables informed decision-making. The FP&A Manager will build infrastructure for standardized financial analysis while developing capabilities for more responsive and proactive bespoke analysis. As a trusted thought partner this position will anticipate foundation needs provide strategic insights and foster collaboration across teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Planning and Cash Flow Management

  • Lead the foundations budgeting and forecasting processes in coordination with program and administrative departments creating less manual and more efficient approaches
  • Develop infrastructure for standardized financial analysis with automation
  • Build internal multi-year models and capabilities to enhance annual cash flow forecasting precision
  • Coordinate cash management with the investment team

Partnership and Foundation-Specific Services

  • Act as a trusted thought partner who anticipates the foundations needs and collaborates for maximum impact
  • Support payout requirement monitoring to ensure compliance with regulations
  • Oversee administrative budget tracking and reporting to support departmental effectiveness
  • Prepare financial reports dashboards and presentations for leadership and the board of directors.
  • Provide clear financial communication that enhances understanding for non-financial stakeholders

Team and Data Analytics Development

  • Create infrastructure and processes for enhanced reporting capabilities
  • Build capacity for creative problem-solving with clear communication
  • Establish a learning culture that values continuous improvement and curiosity
  • Develop cross-training opportunities that enhance team resilience
  • Foster an environment that aspires to exceptional performance and continuous growth

Systems and Process Optimization

  • Optimize the manual processes currently used for financial analysis
  • Collaborate with IT to enhance technological capabilities for financial planning
  • Create documentation and training for financial analysis methodologies
  • Participate in initiatives to improve data integration between financial and programmatic systems

Required Skills Experience and Education

  • Bachelors degree in Finance Business or related field; MBA preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in financial analysis planning and business partnering
  • Experience in nonprofit finance foundation or endowment management strongly preferred
  • Advanced financial modeling and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of private foundation regulations particularly regarding payout requirements
  • Excellent communication abilities particularly translating financial concepts for non-financial audiences
  • Strong data visualization and presentation skills
  • Proficiency in financial planning systems and advanced Excel
  • Demonstrated success in building collaborative relationships across functions
  • Passion for creative problem-solving with clear communication
  • Commitment to high professional and ethical standards
  • Embodies a powerhouse mindset - combining exceptional performance with joy and curiosity in the work
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel Word and financial reporting systems
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects

Compensation and Benefits

The Hewlett Foundation is committed to providing compensation that is competitive within the philanthropic sector. We offer a generous total compensation package that emphasizes both base salary and comprehensive benefits. The salary range for this role starts at $142000-$175000. Offers are based on the candidates years of experience and our practice of maintaining salary equity within the foundation.


Physical Demands/Work Environment

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time and to travel via various modes of transportation for extended periods of time. The Accounting Manager role will be based in Menlo Park Calif. The foundation has reopened in a hybrid work environment of three days in the office per week at a minimum.
