The District is a government agency whose mission is to protect water resources minimize flood risks and ensure the publics water needs are met. We serve a population of nearly 6million people in west-central Florida as directed by state law.

Join our Data Collection Bureau

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) a leader in protecting Floridas water resources is seeking a leader to manage the operational and fiscal activities of the Geohydrologic Data Section. The Geohydrologic Data Manager will manage and lead the Geohydrologic Data Section within the Data Collection Bureau of the Operations Lands & Resource Monitoring Division. The Geohydrologic Data Section is responsible for the Regional Observation Monitor-well Program Quality of Water Improvement Program and other special projects. In addition this position requires the management of the Data Monitoring and Investigations Team (DMIT) and coordination with two additional water management agencies on drilling activities within the Central Florida Water Initiative area.

Section activities include exploratory coring and testing well construction design well construction installation oversight aquifer performance testing geophysical logging well repair and abandonments and well plugging reimbursement processing. These activities support numerous District initiatives well networks and project support activities including the Central Florida Water Initiative Southern Water Use Caution Area Lower Floridan aquifer exploration Northern District Water Resource Assessment Project groundwater models minimum flows and levels Northern District Drilling Program and the Coastal Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network requiring close coordination with other sections across the District. This position manages thirteen direct reports including professional geologists hydrogeologists drillers driller helpers and technicians and one student intern.

Starting Compensation:

Scientific Manager 1 $75000.00 - $87500.00
Scientific Manager 2 $85000.00 - $105000.00
Scientific Manager 3 $90000.00 - $112500.00

The starting salary range for the Scientific Manager positionreflects the minimum to 50% of the compensation. The starting salary will be based on the education and experience of the successful candidate. The District conducts annual performance evaluations that may award applicable pay increases based on positive employee performance.

Essential Functions

  • Plans and develops section goals within the context of the District division and bureau goals; plans work for the section to meet goals and makes decisions regarding staff needs and assignments; develops procedures to meet the sections work plan goals; and schedules and conducts section meetings.

  • Rewards encourages and recognizes staff promoting a positive work environment; hires trains evaluates and coaches or discharges staff and resolves staff issues; supervises staff in accordance with established policies and procedures; actively supports and promotes succession planning and activities for staff professional development; sets performance expectations and monitors performance; and oversees generates and implements health & safety plans.

  • Communicates effectively with staff other sections bureau chiefs and Executive; coordinates effectively with other agencies utilities and water management districts related to DMIT; communicates technical and other topics clearly and concisely with the internal team outside agencies stakeholders and the general public; and prepares and gives formal and informal presentations to various groups including the Districts Governing Board and Advisory Committees.

  • Makes decisions concerning staff requirements work procedures or assignments and process improvement considering budgetary limitations and time constraints; develops solutions to enhance efficiency; and prepares justifies and manages the section budget to fund operations and increase efficiency.

  • Provide review and comment on technical reports letters and other documents; and provides guidance and direction to staff and assist with the resolution of complex unusual situations and develops solutions.

  • Participates in District emergency management activities and other departmental activities; and performs other duties as needed.

Working Conditions

Employee works in a standard office environment. Occasional travel usually during the workday is required. Performs continuous repetitive tasks (to include keyboarding) with one or both hands. Occasionally lifts and carries objects up to 10 pounds. Occasionally requires bending and reaching above shoulder level. May spend time out in the field in remote areas. Employee may be subject to call-in outside of regularly scheduled work hours or required to be on call including on nights weekends or holidays to respond to emergency management activities or other incidents requiring rapid response in support of District operations.

Additional Details

The primary work location for this position will be based out of our Brooksville FL office. However please note that there will also be some time spent working at the Tampa Service Office. This position is eligible for compensatory time for hours worked over 40 hours in a week.
