Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in one or more of the following content areas: Biology Earth Science or Environmental Science. A strong foundation in scientific principles inquiry-based instruction and curriculum aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) is essential. The ideal teacher demonstrates the ability to engage high school learners through differentiated instruction laboratory investigations and real-world applications of science. Strong classroom management communication and organizational skills are required along with a collaborative spirit to support student success within a diverse educational community.

DESCRIPTION

The High School Science Teacher will deliver engaging rigorous instruction in one or more science disciplinesBiology Earth Science or Environmental Sciencebased on school needs and teacher certification. This role focuses on fostering scientific literacy critical thinking and inquiry skills through hands-on labs field investigations and the integration of technology. The teacher is expected to build a classroom environment that encourages curiosity academic growth and responsible citizenship while aligning instruction with the Virginia SOLs and division-wide learning goals.

GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)

  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and division pacing guides.
  • Deliver content in Biology Earth Science or Environmental Science using varied instructional strategies and hands-on experiences.
  • Plan and supervise safe laboratory and field activities that promote scientific inquiry and data analysis.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students including those with accommodations or enrichment needs.
  • Use technology tools and digital platforms to enhance instruction and facilitate student engagement.
  • Assess student learning through formative and summative assessments; analyze data to inform instruction.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate regularly with families and support staff.
  • Collaborate with science department colleagues instructional coaches and school staff to promote interdisciplinary learning.
  • Maintain a positive structured and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Participate in professional development activities department meetings and school events.
  • Support school-wide goals including graduation readiness college and career planning and student well-being.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

SUPERVISION

The High School Science Teacher reports to the school principal and other school administrators and may receive instructional support and guidance from the division instructional leaders.

WORK CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a standard classroom and science laboratory setting with occasional outdoor activities for fieldwork or investigations. The position may involve occasional after-school commitments such as tutoring science fairs or parent engagement events. The role requires frequent interaction with students colleagues and families and may involve standing for extended periods handling lab materials and equipment and following safety protocols. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.

CONTRACT LENGTH

200 Days

If you hold a bachelors degree and are willing to commit and take steps toward earning your teaching license you may be eligible for an Associate Teacher position. Associate Teachers serve in full teaching roles while receiving support and guidance as they work toward licensure. The Associate Teacher salary for 202526 is approximately $48265 (pending budget approval).
