Job Description

Job Title: Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts

Location: Academic Programs

Pay Grade: Administrative and Professional Scale Grade A06

Work Calendar: All 12 Month Staff

FLSA Status: Exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Director of Student Access and Opportunity the Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) provides leadership in the development implementation and coordination of the Stafford K-12 Visual and Performing Arts program. The VPA Coordinator serves as lead content specialist and resource for school administrators and teachers grades K-12. This highly visible role requires a polished public presence and the ability to communicate effectively on behalf of the divisions Visual and Performing Arts programs in various public forums including media interviews community events and school showcases.

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Division Level Support

  • Provide leadership in the development implementation and evaluation of the K12 Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) curriculum instructional strategies and program initiatives including targeted technical assistance.
  • Collaborate with educators to integrate the arts into the broader instructional program and within Stafford Schools curriculum framework.
  • Support early-career teachers and establish a content mentor network with monthly check-ins to promote professional growth and collaboration.
  • Facilitate monthly meetings with VPA lead teachers and maintain a rotating schedule to equitably attend countywide teacher meetings across all VPA areas (e.g. Elementary Art Middle School Chorus) providing balanced support and fostering community.
  • Improve and expand student academic program opportunities and access and support the GATES and Commonwealth Governors School art selection processes.
  • Coordinate and supervise the annual Arts Festival leading its planning execution and feedback gathering in collaboration with the Communications Department and key stakeholders; additionally provide support for other county-wide fine arts events and activities (e.g. All-County Band) including evening and weekend responsibilities.
  • Develop and manage the VPA content area budget and liaise with the Transportation Department to ensure student travel to events assessments and competitions.
  • Annually update the Safety in the Art Room manual for K12 classrooms and serve as the divisions Right to Know (RTK)/Hazard Communication (HazCom) coordinator.

School Based Supports

  • Design and deliver professional learning including job-embedded coaching and teacher leadership development for VPA and gifted (GATES) art teachers.
  • Respond to requests for support from Leadership at schools
  • Create a rotating schedule to help strengthen VPA programs through PLCs classroom walkthroughs and ongoing consultation with school leaders.
  • Develop and manage the instrument replacement cycle for each school.
  • Build relationships with the VPA staff principals and be present and visible to support the schools.
  • Conduct needs assessment twice a year for VPA programs in the schools.
  • Collaborate with Leads and teachers to ensure equipment in schools is safe and operating properly.
  • Train staff on safety measures in VPA Classrooms and ensure it is part of classroom instruction for students.

Represent where appropriate the school division in the work of regional state and/or national curriculum associations and study groups

  • Serve as chairperson of the VPA curriculum committees.
  • Support the work of the VPA Advisory Committee through collaboration with the chairperson and attendance at meetings.
  • Represent Staord Schools on various local and state professional organizations focused on VPA.
  • Work with architects and planning directors to design art and music facilities for new construction and renovation and recommend necessary equipment and supplies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Masters degree in education with professional experience in the field of visual and/or performing arts preferred
  • Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement in Administration and Supervision or ability to secure same preferred
  • Endorsement in a visual or performing art.
  • Demonstrate signicant evidence of training teaching and leadership experiences in VPA education.
  • Demonstrated success in planning and executing large-scale public events at the school county or organizational level.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Maintain current knowledge of developments in curriculum and staff development in the fine arts.
    • Current issues trends and practices in fine arts education.

    • Interpret educational research and use the information appropriately in decision making and program design.

    • Work with K-12 teachers on instructional strategies for the classroom.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is primarily inside but could be subject to extreme weather conditions with moderate noise temperatures that are subject to weather conditions and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
  • The work is moderate work requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
