POSITION SUMMARY The first assistant golf course superintendents primary function is to assist the golf course superintendent with the day-to-day operation of the golf course maintenance department and to serve as the department head in the absence of the superintendent. *The golf course superintendent is the ultimate decision maker for the maintenance department and as such will have final authority in all disputes/disagreements relating to the operation of the department. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Planning and supervising the maintenance of greens tees fairways rough and bunkers; supervises employees and their use of equipment.
- Instructs equipment operators on the proper operation and care of mowing and other equipment; supervises pesticide/fertilizer applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide/fertilizer application equipment.
- Assist in hiring staff personnel management evaluation and discipline of golf maintenance employees.
- Conducts daily staff assignment meetings and monthly safety meetings.
- Opening and closing duties of the maintenance facility the gates doors wash pad coffee pot lights etc.
- Oversight of the maintenance operation and repair of irrigation pump stations irrigation controllers sprinkler heads and valves. Responsible for installation of new irrigation areas. Responsible for irrigation water logs and electrical troubleshooting of controllers and pump stations.
- Responsible for communication with the Pro Shop on a daily basis to report on maintenance practices that may affect golf operations and Tweeting daily conditions.
- Project management of in-house course improvement projects.

- Serves as department representative for employee safety committee; conducts all safety training with staff including safety orientation of new staff training of new equipment with staff and monitoring compliance of safety policies and procedures from staff
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS - This position requires ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of staff and equipment.
- Basic computer skills to prepare clear and concise reports through word processing and spreadsheets.
- This position requires a valid drivers license.
- This position requires current state licensing as a pesticide applicator or the ability to obtain a license within the first 6 months of employment.
- This position requires a college degree preferably in Turfgrass Management or related field with a minimum of 3 years of golf course experience.
- This position requires working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees fairways greens; the seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; the planting cultivating pruning and caring for plants shrubs and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials and drainage control methods.
- Experience managing bentgrass greens in the transition zone and the ability to train subordinates on the task of wilt watching.
WORK REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENT - This position requires some heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. walking up and down steep terrain pulling irrigation hoses and bending/twisting as needed for irrigation repair.
- Most work is conducted out-of-doors. There is inherent risk involved when exposed to the natural elements including sunburn frost bite dehydration heat exhaustion heat stroke lightning strike insect bite encounters with wild animals and falling debris.
- Must be able to work early mornings late nights weekends and holiday as the golf course maintenance department operates 363 days/year including all weekends and most holidays.
Must be authorized to work in the US. Must be able to pass a drug screen test and background check. This position does not pay for relocation.
