STAUNTON CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

POSITION DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Bus Driver

LOCATION: Transportation Department

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Supervisor of Transportation

GRADE/RANK: 1813

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY:

The Bus Driver drives students to and from school on a daily basis in a safe efficient and economical manner and to extracurricular events on a non-regular basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

The minimum performance expectations include but are not limited to the following functions/tasks:

  • To conduct pre-trip inspection of school bus prior to every trip for defects;
  • To use established routes and designated bus stops;
  • To operate bus on approve time schedule;
  • To report bus accidents and student injuries to authorities;
  • To instruct riders regarding being responsible passengers;
  • To drive with safety of students as first priority;
  • To establish favorable working relationships with other drivers maintenance personnel teachers students and principals;
  • To demonstrate knowledge of rules/regulations promulgated by local state and federal authorities;
  • To demonstrate knowledge of state laws and local ordinances and;
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency;
  • Meet school bus driver certification requirements;
  • Meet state requirements for appropriate licensing;
  • Meet state physical examination requirements;
  • Meet local or state standards for driving test;
  • Meet local or state standards for driver record check;
  • Ability to operate all vehicle types used in transporting students and;
  • Ability to operate radio communication when necessary.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and vibration. While performing the duties of this job the employee may be exposed to germs and potentially blood borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of support staff personnel.
