About the Role
The Early Psychosis Senior Clinician is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the Early Psychosis Program (EPP) at Hawthorn Community Mental Health Clinic. This position will facilitate the provision of services that will enable earlier access to mental health services for those people who are developing or at risk of developing a psychotic disorder.

  • Liaise with medical staff nursing staff and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure consumers are provided high quality recovery-oriented treatment and care that meets relevant standards such as professional service and quality standards with particular focus on the Early Psychosis client group
  • Ensure systems for clinical review are in place in accordance with the service policy
  • Develop and maintain effective linkages to ensure optimal continuity of care between other parts of the service including Community Teams Emergency Department housing and other area mental health services whilst supporting and upskilling junior staff to do the same.



Your Contribution

  • Certificate Diploma or Degree (minimum) in Nursing which meets the registration requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency Division 1 or 3 and Registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency; or

  • Masters Degree or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology recognized by the Australian Psychological Society and registered as a Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.; or

  • Bachelor of Social Work (). Eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Work; or

  • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy. Eligible for membership of Australian Association of Occupational Therapy and registered as an Occupational Therapist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

  • 5 years experience in Mental Health settings for Nursing and Psychology applicants and 7 years for social work and Occupational Therapy applicants is desirable.

The Early Psychosis Team provides specialised treatment and ongoing support throughout the week during business hours. Employing the Strengths Model of Recovery-Oriented Practice this program will facilitate the provision of services that will enable earlier access to mental health services for those people who are developing or at risk of developing a psychotic disorder.

St. Vincents Mental Health (SVMH) includes an adult area mental health service for the inner city areas of Yarra and Boroondara. The adult mental health service components are: The Footbridge Community Care Unit (CCU) the 44 bed Acute Inpatient Service (AIS) located on the St. Vincents Hospital site the North Fitzroy PARC and two community mental health services (CMHS) at Hawthorn and East Melbourne (Clarendon CMHS). Community mental health services comprise the Triage and Crisis assessment and Treatment (CAT) Service and the Primary Intervention Care Team (PICT) includes Extended Triage and HOPE (Suicide Prevention) Continuing Care (CCT) Mobile Support and Treatment (MST) and Homeless Outreach (CHOPS) services. A Consultation & Liaison Service is provided to the health service. NEXUS Dual Diagnosis Service the Body Image and Eating Disorders Assessment and Treatment Service (BETRS) and NEVIL Training Cluster are regional services. Statewide services are the Victorian Dual Disability Service and the Victorian Transcultural Mental Health. The Acute Inpatient Service includes 5 beds designated as the Koori State-wide Inpatient Service and linked to the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service. All St Vincents Mental Health clinical staff are expected to be familiar and practice in a manner consistent with the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce.

Practicing within the Strengths Model of Recovery Oriented Care under the guidance of the Designated Team Manager and Team Consultant Psychiatrist and in conjunction with the Program Manager Early Psychosis (St Vincents Mental Health) the Early Psychosis Senior Clinician is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the Early Psychosis Program (EPP) at Hawthorn Community Mental Health Clinic. This position will facilitate the provision of services that will enable earlier access to mental health services for those people who are developing or at risk of developing a psychotic disorder. The successful applicant will carry a caseload of clients who are under the EP pathway and will develop/support networks with agencies most likely to encounter people with emerging psychosis including youth counselling support and accommodation services schools and support services drug and alcohol services and CAMHS. There may occasionally be a requirement to support clients who are not under the EP pathway according to service demand.

The clinician will provide education primary secondary and tertiary consultation services and where indicated onsite services to facilitate timely referral and response to emerging psychosis as well as referral to other health and community services where indicated. Over time the position will also facilitate the provision of these services by other clinicians involved with the EPP.

While the role is located at Hawthorn Community Mental Health Service it will work collaboratively with its counterpart positions at Clarendon Community Mental Health Service and across the SVHM mental health service to be a part of the service wide EPP. The clinical role includes the opportunity to bring a discipline specific approach to the practice of recovery-focused case management skills and working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team. The clinician will also support the Senior Staff Group as appropriate in-service development at the Clinic including the review of clinical and team processes.

PORTFOLIOS

The clinician will hold a portfolio in Early Psychosis. As part of this they will be responsible for ensuring the effective coordination of consumers in the Early Psychosis Program (EPP). This includes working with consumers and their families to provide support and psychoeducation; linking in with appropriate community supports; post discharge follow up. The clinician would be expected to attend relevant service meetings contribute to care planning and service development/ research in this area. They will provide resources education and secondary consultation to staff around management of Early Psychosis within their own caseloads.
