Title: Assistant Coach (High School/Junior High) paid or volunteer
Qualifications:
- Valid Iowa coaching authorization
- Required Dioceses VIRTUS Training and follow-up on training letters provided from diocese
- Has knowledge and background in assigned sport
- Valid mandatory reporter abuse certificate (every five years)
- CPR certification
Reports to: Head coach in conjunction with the Activities Director and the Secondary Principal.
Supervise:
All athletes and teams assigned to them and assumes supervisory control over: practices competitions open gyms locker rooms transportation etc.
Job Goal:
To carry out the aims and objectives of the sport program as outlined by the head coach. To instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Has a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Diocension Board of Education and is responsible for its implementation
- Has knowledge of the existing system state and league regulations; implements regulations consistently
- Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer to all student and parent/guardian requests or grievances through the proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance
- Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program
- Coaches shall attend outside of regular school hours as established by the board such professional meeting as might be called by school authorities for coordinating the work of the coach in the school program
Administrative Duties:
- Assists the head coach in scheduling and providing transportation to and from tournaments and special events
- Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees
- Provides documentation to the Activities Director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations parent/guardian consent and eligibility
- Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites
Responsibilities to Student-Athletes:
- Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant
- Presence at all practices games and while traveling provides assistance and guidance to and safeguards for each participant
- Directs student managers and statisticians on respective teams
- Works in conjunction with the head coach to determine discipline and delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary.
Equipment and Facilities:
- Is accountable to the head coach for all equipment. Provides a list to the head coach of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing and storing equipment and submits to the head coach an annual inventory and current records concerning equipment
- Recommends to the head coach budgetary items for the next years in his or her area of the program
- Monitors equipment rooms and coaches offices and authorizes who may enter
- Permits the athletes to only be in the authorized area of the building at the appropriate times
- Examines locker room before and after practices and contests (home and away) checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment and facility
- Actively supervises the locker room and bus/vans
- Is responsible for the safety of athletes before and after practices and contests.
- Secure all doors lights windows and locks before leaving the building.
- Ensures all students have been picked up or have left the building after returning from an away trip.
- Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property including its care and proper use.
Program Responsibilities:
- Assists the head coach in carrying out program responsibilities
- Makes press releases and school announcements
- Instructs team members as to changes in the rules and teaches fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the head coach
- Maintains a record of team statistics
- Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the head coach of that sport
- Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as outlined by the head coach
- Arrives early enough before practice contests and meetings to prepare adequately and remains long enough to help players with problems or to become involved in staff decisions
- Helps in planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight program
- Never criticizes admonishes or argues with the head coach or any staff member within ear or eyes of players or parent/guardians
- Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the head coach
- Attends contests when possible of other teams in the program
- Performs such other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the head coach or the Activities Director
