The Emergency Medical Services Learning Resources Center (EMSLRC) Instructional Service Specialist provides instruction and support to faculty staff and students for purposes of training and intermediate and advanced-level emergency medicine courses (i.e. BLS ACLS PALS EMS initial education).Instruction and support include but is not limited to the design and knowledge of current classroom/online assessment curriculum and presentation for all programmatic-related elements. Instructional activities may occur on the UI Health Care campus or at offsite locations throughout the State of Iowa. Department hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday although instructional activities may require work during night and weekend hours.
Position Responsibilities
Instruct Train Consult Support:
- Coordinate the operation of and/or serve as the primary or secondary instructor for EMS initial education programs EMS refresher programs American Heart Association (AHA) and other nationally recognized course(s) as assigned.
- Consult and collaborate with faculty staff and external agencies regarding instructional needs and the application of instructional design and tools in the delivery of instruction.
- Schedule adjunct faculty staff instructors and contract instructors as needed for courses in the area of responsibility.
Evaluate/assess student skills:
- Provide consulting and instructional services for classroom skills labs and simulation activities.
- Evaluate candidates participating in state and national certification psychomotor examinations.
- Provide the EMSLRC Director and Medical Director with regular updates regarding student progression.
- Respond to all questions/inquiries in a timely and effective manner. Includes but not limited to applicants course participants faculty UI Health Care and University of Iowa staff and external customers and agencies.
- Assist the EMSLRC Director and Medical Director in coordinating the efforts of hospitals and field agencies serving as affiliates to the EMSLRC EMS education programs.
Design and Create Instructional Materials:
- Design develop and evaluate instructional materials. Evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies and educational approaches used.
- Assure course curricula is consistent with AHA National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians and the National EMS Education Standards.
- Develop prepare assemble and distribute handouts/materials for course participants updating and editing as necessary.
- Consult and collaborate with the EMSLRC medical director to ensure current evidence-based emergency medicine standards of care literature and practices are utilized.
Facilities/Technology Management:
- Manage the instructional facility including the classrooms labs and mobile equipment.
- Administer operate and manage courseware management systems (i.e. ICON Canvas).
- Support the application of technology within the teaching facility.
- Operate and maintain complex equipment requiring specialized knowledge or skills such as trainers and simulation manikins.
- Assure facilities are compliant with federal and state regulations and accreditation standards.
- Provide routine cleaning and preventative maintenance of training equipment.
Operational Management:
- Provide guidance regarding teaching materials and presentations.
- Oversee manage and maintain approval and data for EMS Continuing Education Programs.
- Manage student applications interview processes and general course information.
- Develop prepare and monitor course enrollments and generate enrollment completion and course-related outcomes measurement reports for administrative review and to meet accreditation and regulatory requirements.
- Evaluate and implement changes to EMSLRC educational programs to support the mission strategic plan and financial integrity in accordance with overall departmental objectives.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Education Requirement:
- Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Masters degree in education or an EMS-related discipline is desired.
- Current knowledge of emergency medicine standards of care literature and current practices.
Experience Requirement:
- Minimum three (3) years of prehospital EMS or related public safety experience.
- Previous experience providing adult instruction or health care education with distance education experience preferred.
- Previous experience in the design of curriculum or course construction.
- Proven ability to meet deadlines conduct follow-up and multi-task within a changing environment under minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with students professional health care staff and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal communications/interactions.
- Working knowledge of computer software applications such as Microsoft Office and Canvas.
Certification/Licensure Requirement:
- Nationally certified (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians) Paramedic. Nationally certified EMT or Advanced EMT applicants may be considered with Paramedic certification required within two years of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree in a related field (i.e. Nursing Education Criminal Justice Fire Science).
- Five (5) years of experience performing direct patient care as an EMS provider in an urban EMS system
- Fire service or EMS leadership experience at the company officer or field supervisor level
- National certification as an EMS educator (NCEE) or Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE)
- Experience precepting EMS students during field internship
