Sport Medicine Teacher

Job Title: Sport Medicine Instructor and Athletic Trainer (Teaching Required)

Reports to: CTE Director and Athletic Director

Terms of Employment: 190 Days Supplement for Athletic Training

Athletic Trainer will understand that while a reasonable effort will be made to ensure competitions and practices remain on their initial schedule flexibility will be needed when changes have to be made due to unforeseen circumstances. As such all home competitions and practices of contact sports will require coverage for a portion of their duration. This position will require weekend and evening hours to ensure coverage.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Athletic Training from an accredited college or university.
  • National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification Inc. (BOC) *BOC Required
  • South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control Athletic Trainer Certification Verification SCDHEC *State Certification Required
  • Hold and maintain first aid certification and CPR certification

General Summary:
The Athletic Trainer shall serve as a liaison of physical health support to and between athletes coaches of athletes Athletic Directors physicians parents and other parties deemed necessary by the Athletic Director. The Athletic trainer shall enact and use reasonable efforts and professionalism to ensure that players participate in interscholastic activities and events only when physically able; and that any instructions provided by their attending physician are understood and followed. Develops and delivers a Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway focused on injury prevention rehabilitation anatomy and emergency care for high school students. They evaluate and treat sport-related injuries and student performance in the classroom.

Essential Duties:
This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties knowledge or abilities associated with this classification but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements. The Athletic Director as necessary shall hold the right to modify the duties.

  • This position will require teaching in a secondary setting in addition to the Athletic Trainer responsibilities.
  • Establish an effective Athletic Training program for high school students.
  • Supervises Student Athletic Training assistants and provides instruction and guidance as necessary.
  • Follow both the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics as set forth by National Athletic Trainers Association.
  • Provide First Aid and injury assessment/treatment/rehabilitation/reconditioning for York School District 1 student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer will be responsible for making appropriate physician referrals.
  • Assist coaching staff in evaluating and implementing sport-specific conditioning programs and methods
  • Maintain an effective and efficient athletic training room with clear office hours outlined for the school year and summer.
  • Oversee the ordering of supplies and equipment pertaining to the training room and maintain an up-to-date inventory. Provide the Athletic Director with an annual budget for supplies
  • Equip each team with appropriate first aid supplies
  • Create a safe playing environment by monitoring and controlling environmental risks and reporting risks to the appropriate authority.
  • Assess and report the progress of recovering athletes to coaches physicians students and parents.
  • Maintain and monitor the yearly physical forms and consent forms as established by the SCHSL in a timely manner.
  • Participate in the development review and continuous improvement of the YCHS Athletic Emergency Action Plan.
  • Keep a daily log of treatments and injuries to all athletes by maintaining high quality medical records on all injuries including SOAP notes referrals and progress notes.
  • Provide First Aid and emergency care to the visiting team athletes if notified to do so by game officials site officials or the visiting team coaches.

Ability to:

  • Operate a variety of medical equipment
  • Identify when referrals to physicians health services hospitals or other health professionals are necessary
  • Attend off-campus sporting events as needed
  • Develop and implement individualized rehabilitation and reconditioning plans for injured students
  • Administer appropriate care for injuries sustained as a result of athletic participation.
  • Communicate effectively with all necessary parties regarding physical injuries
  • Learn and apply district policies and procedures
  • Lift and carry up to 100 lbs

The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Boards policy on Evaluation of Support Service Personnel.
