Job DutiesThe Certified Staff Interpreteroccupies an important role within the Department of Judicial Services at the Supreme Court of Virginias Executive Secretarys Office. This role is crucial for ensuring that the judiciarys interpreting services are accessible efficient and effective fulfilling the needs of diverse communities across the state.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

  • Interpreter
    • Provide daily language access in Spanish utilizing the three modes of interpretation to the assigned courts including jury trials.
    • Use interpreting equipment to interpret for multiple LEP parties simultaneously.
    • Provide video remote and telephonic interpretation as needed.
    • Participate in professional development and continuous education opportunities.
    • Support other courts language needs
  • Mentor Language Access Assistants in obtaining certification.
  • Local Court Coordinator
    • Coordinate and manage all language access requests including languages other than Spanish.
    • Use programs and technology necessary to perform the professional duties of a Staff Interpreter.
    • Participate in the translation of documents forms informational materials and other written materials into the Spanish language.

The Certified Staff Interpreter may be required to perform additional tasks as needed to support the objectives of the FLS Division Department of Judicial Services and Office of the Executive Secretary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be able to be appointed by judicial officers in program court
  • Virginia Court Interpreter Certified or meets all of Virginias certification reciprocity requirements
  • Extensive current experience interpreting in a court setting
  • Proven computer skills
  • Excellent written English skills
  • Familiar with the nuances of language and legal systems and cultural differences in the countries where both the source and target languages are spoken and demonstrate continued work toward enhancing such knowledge
  • Thorough knowledge of Virginia interpreting guidelines and canons of professional conduct


    Preferred Qualifications/Experience -
  • Translation skills a plus
  • Proof of continuing education in court interpretation
  • Position may require some travel.

Additional Considerations

Conflict of Interest
As this is a salaried position the successful candidate and any business or corporation in which they materially participate may not undertake to bill separately for services provided to the Office of the Executive Secretary from the date of full-time employment.
From the date of employment successful candidates must discontinue any on-going business relationship(s) with regular parties to cases in the venues where the interpreter will be providing service.
Judicial System employees are governed by the Rules of Conduct. A successful candidate would have no existing conflicts of interest at the date of hire. A conflict of interests arises when an employee knows that he she or a family or household member might be so personally or financially affected by a matter that a reasonable person with knowledge of relevant facts would question the employees ability properly to perform official duties in an impartial manner.
